It seems to me that Porto's Surf Cafe does not receive the same buzz as the prior spot Papa Jake's. Although, having experienced both extensively, the under rated Porto's is really growing on me. Ryan White, the new owner and Manhattan Beach native, worked at Papa Jake's for a long period of time so you will definitely see a lot of similarities. Those Papa Jake fans will be happy to see almost no difference to the signature Philly cheesesteak, having the same roll and garnished with the same sweet peppers and hot peppers.
In addition to specialty sandwiches and salads, they now offer burgers, smoothies, falafel, humus, onion rings and french fries (including red sweet potato fries - even sounds boutique and are delivered separately in a small paper bag which really helps maintain the crispness and integrity of the fry that is normally lost with delivery).
What I really enjoy about Porto's is Ryan's passion and insistence on using only the freshest and most natural ingredients. Porto's serves Estancia free-range burgers, Jidori chicken, Niman all-natural bacon and hot dogs, and Coleman all natural turkey. They also pride themself on carrying several flavors from the Guayaki beverage line, which I'm a huge fan of... I think it is really cool that from a small sandwich shop, you are getting the same products/ingredients that you would expect from a Whole Foods. They are also big on only using only 100% eco-friendly plates, utensils, cups...
I've had only positive experiences with Ryan and the delivery crew. I'm rooting for their success. They can cater from 10 to 200 people and also offer on-site cooking. Or just use them how I do, which is most weekends with the delivery service (which is free in MB by the way). I hope you enjoy it!!
Same as it ever was - only more. Whitey learned the ropes from Jake back in the day and he still has the same cheesesteaks, tuna, and hot and cold sandwiches as when the place opened. But now there's even more - fries, o-rings, Falafels. Los Angeles Magazine gave him a thumbs-up. The Cordon Bleu rocks.
