Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! No crunch, no helmet head, and smells good!

Pros: Nice scent, non sticky, no flaking, holds naturally, no hard hair

Cons: Isn't a freeze type spray, doesn't hold up real well in extreme conditions

The Bottom Line: No crunch and no helmet head. This holds my hair with a natural look and feel. Not as effective as freezing sprays but darn good for the price!

I have been using my curling iron more than usual lately because my hair is getting crazy long and needs some body. The problem is, the waves look great for about 10 minutes and then they fall right out. So, I have been testing hair sprays that hold but don't crunch.

I have used many Aussie products but I just picked up Aussie Mega Styling Spray and, while it doesn't hold for more than about five hours, it does a good job with no crunchiness. My hair looks and feels natural and bouncy, not hard.

The Official Word

Flexible Hold
Keep your style movin' & groovin' -- even for those of use who have no rhythm.
Workable finishing spray with AUSTRALIAN FLOWER EXTRACT
Once set, you can brush through
Never sticky or flaky

The Packaging

I bought the 14 ounce aerosol can of the spray. I have heard it also comes in a non-aerosol spray but I didn't see it on the shelves at Rite Aid where I seem to live lately (picking up prescriptions, of all things).

The can is dark purple with colorful print and a plastic pill on/push on cap. The nozzle is a typical spray one which distributes the spray in a fine mist.

My Experience

This is one heck of a big can of spray. I dried and used the curling iron on my hair as usual and then pulled off the plastic cap and sprayed Aussie Mega Styling Spray all over my hair, holding the can about eight inches away from my head.

The scent was surprising. Hair sprays usually smell kind of gross but this spray has a nice scent. I can't really relate exactly what it smells like but it is much less harsh than usual hair sprays. I usually sneeze when I use sprays on my hair, especially aerosols. This one didn't cause that reaction.

The spray didn't leave any droplets on my hair and did seem to hold the waves. I was very pleased when I touched my hair and it was soft and natural feeling, not crunchy or hard.

I went on with my day and, while my waves didn't stay perfect, my hair looked good for about five hours without going limp like it so often does.

This spray is made to be brushed through and I can do that without tugging or ripping my hair. However, I try not to brush it too much because the waves brush out as well. I did use a brush to "backcomb" my hair and it looked fine. I was impressed with the hold of this spray even though stronger, harder sprays hold longer. My hair started to get limp after about five hours. For me, that's awesome! I probably could get better results from a freeze type spray but I hate untouchable, hard hair and would rather have hair that bounces and moves rather than it being stuck to my head like a helmet.

This spray seems to be a very good compromise between totally bouncy, natural hair and helmet head.

Best of all, the spray is inexpensive and lasts for a long time!

However, if it is raining out, very humid, or windy, the spray doesn't hold up very well. I have to try to restyle my hair when I am inside. It doesn't go totally limp but it does lose much of its style in those conditions. The can is so huge that I don't carry it with me so I only get about half the hold as I would in other conditions. My hair still looks better than with no hair spray but does lose some body.

Buying Info

This spray is available at drugstores and mass-market stores off and online. I paid around $3.50 for my can and it often is on sale for $2.99. That is a steal! I usually buy salon spray that is many times that amount and works no better.

This spray is a good every day, natural hold spray. The mist is fine, the scent is nice, and the hold is natural. While this product won't mold your hair into place and render it unmovable, it does hold a wave without crunchiness and hard hair, two things I just hate when using hair sprays.

If you want natural hold, this is a good spray to try. It's inexpensive and will last for a long time. I also like that it washes out of my hair easily and completely and leaves no stickiness or residue behind.

The only thing that keeps me from giving this spray 5 stars is that it doesn't hold up well in rainy, windy, or very humid environments. I tend to go somewhat limp when I am out on those extremes while wearing the spray. Otherwise, it's a 4 star product and one well worth picking up the next time you go shopping.

My hair presents a challenge of unparalleled resistance for valiant efforts to transform it into a coif worthy of 1975. Defiantly straight by dint of Catalan recalcitrance and Pawnee savagery, my lovely black locks are in no way cooperative when blow-dried and sprayed to sweeping layers. Faith, not a spray prior yielded adequate results, either conspiring with my hair to burden its lazy slump skullward or setting it stiff and firmly prepared for high impact should I be thrown from a motorcycle.   …
