Go for Gold, Canada!

I've hardly watched the Winter Olympics as most of the places I've lived in hardly broadcast it (unless it's on Sports on Cable TV but that's one channel I don't subscribed to). This year though, I'm living in Shenzhen and the China's state tv station CCTV-5 (a sports channel) has been telecasting the various competitive programs throughout the day and it's hard to miss it!

Originally, I had titled this review "China's first Gold". However, as the Winter Olympics progresses, I do think I need to show some support for Canada. So, here's to Canada's Ice Hockey! All the very best of luck!!! Stay focus & do what you do best! Go for Gold, Canada!!!


China's 1st Gold

My favorite of the sport events is figure skating, especially the Pair Figure Skating. I've always that that's the most beautiful sport activity in the world. It's graceful, colorful & very romantic. Gliding through the ice with beautiful music is just so heavenly to me. The aesthetics of figure skating is undeniable to anyone who has a sense of flow and music. It is one sport I enjoyed watching, be it at the Olympics or the World Championships. Interesting enough, this year, both Chinese pairs won the Gold & Silver medals (Gold: Shen Xue & Zhao Hongbo; Silver: Pang Qing & Tong Jian). The Russian pairs missed the medals as with the Canadians. It wasn't too long ago that it's either the Russian or/& the Canadians monopoly in this event. How things have changed! I thought they were some of the most beautiful pair skatings around! Anyhow, Shen Xue & Zhao Hongbo managed to clinched China's first Gold Medals and their very first Winter Olympics, so that calls for celebrations :-)



I find it interesting that other than Korea, China is the only one other Asian countries that has been actively participating in the Winter Olympics. I do believe the Japanese are in some of the ice skating events but so far, I don't think they have scored any gold medals! That's so unfortunate. Japan used to be real good in the Women's Single for figure skating! But, let's not give Japan a miss yet as the Ladies Figure Skating final will only be held on Feb. 25 so there is still a big chance that Mao Asada might dethrone South Korean Kim Yu-Na ;-) It'll be exciting to watch for the Feb. 25 finals!

Evan Lysacek (from U.S.) won the Men's Single Gold! 
As for Ice dancing, the Russian pair tangoed to the lead & it'll be Russian's only hope for a medal! The pair Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin will be very interesting to watch in the Final!

Latest Update: The Canadian Pair Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir won the Gold for Ice Dancing while Oksana Domnina & Maxim Shabalin won the Bronze. The Silver belongs to Meryl Davis & Charlie White from the States! Way to go, Canada!



Some Surprises
Zhou Yang, the youngest Chinese contestant and the only one who took part in the event, won her first Gold at the Winter Olympics Ladies 1,500 m Short Track. It was such an exciting 2+ minutes of sports! Very impressive & a remarkable achievement. She has certainly made many Chinese proud of her achievement and a boost to China's morale! Well, what can I say, I may not be a Chinese citizen, my great grandparents did originate from this country so that still makes me a Chinese ;-)



New Discoveries
I found something I like to watch and that's Freestyle Skiing. It's exhilarating to see what a sports person could do up in the air and the amount of courage it took to have that lift off and trusting that one'll land in one piece solidly! Amazing!!! I love seeing the somersault jump high up in the air and the excitement of seeing a firm landing. It certainly feels a little like a plane touch down! Aerial Skiing is breathtaking!

Another interesting event is Curling. This is the first time I actually caught a glimpse of it. The game between France & China (Men) was truly spectacular. What a turnaround for the French! Good work!!!




Canada's National Sport
Having lived in Canada for a few years, it's unforgivable of me to not mention a word about Ice Hockey, isn't it? Well, what can I say, I wish the Canadians all the best! Unfortunately for the host country, she just lost a very important game to the Americans (3-5)! Well, it's going to hurt the morale of the Canadian team but I still hope they will at least be able to make it to the Semi-finals! Go, Canada, Go!!!

Latest Update: Canada won both the Men & Ladies Gold in Ice Hockey! Hip hip hurray!!!! Congratulations to both Canadian teams! Great job!



The Spirit of Competition
Having watched some of these Sports Event made me realized that we humans are truly competitive. We do strive to be the best of ourselves and it is in competition that we displayed a certain degree of whatever that's impossible and improbable. We do our best in competitions and we thrive on competitions! Cool!!!

How interesting to hear about the Olympics from another country. You really liked curling? I just can't see the "sport" of it compared to something like figure skating!

Whoa, Sharrie, nice review!  I didn't get a chance to watch the olympics, so thanks for the highlights!  Apparently, what's being aired in China of the Winter Olympics is much better than what's being aired here in the States :P  I love watching figure skating, too.  I agree that it really is the most beautiful sport.  Thanks for sharing! :)

Thanks, Debbie! I'm finding myself enjoying the ladies curling competition! It reminds me of bowling somewhat, which I do enjoy. Figure Skating is still the best though :-)

Canada Wins Gold in Men's Hockey
I'll be the first to tell you I'm not a Hockey fan. This is because it's not a hugely played sport in the US and I wasn't brought up with it. I was brought up watching football. Nevertheless, the Finals of the Men's Hockey of the US vs Canada was something I was NOT going to miss. Given that the US was able to beat Canada(with a score of 5-3) early on in the tournament added to the excitement of this game.      Canada got a quick jump on the US scoring two unanswered …

The United States won the most medals. Some great highlights. In hockey I yelled when U.S. scored with 24 seconds left. I scared the cat.

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, will be held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the resort town of Whistler nearby. Both the Olympic andParalympic Games are being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC).

The 2010 Winter Olympics will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. These will also be the first games to be held in a National Hockey League market since the league allowed its players to participate, starting at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Following Olympic tradition, then Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony, and will be on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event will be officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
