All is Lost is a film about one man and his fight for survival in the Indian Ocean.  This film has no dialogue, but the performance of Robert Redford proves that good acting does not need to involve dialogue.  Robert Redford is seventy-seven  years old, but I forgot about his age watching him do all the physical tasks in this film.  He pulls himself up in a harness to repair the ship's sail.  He swims in the rough Indian Ocean during two storms.    He hits his head on a post in his ship while all his belongings get turned upside down and survives.  I love the intelligence of Robert Redford character.  He reads a book aboard his ship entitled Celestial Navigations.  He uses this knowledge to plot the trek his ship travels by using the stars and a small microscope.  He also  has the knowledge to convert salt water into drinking by drying it in the sun.

The music of the film helps to convey the emotion of the film well.  Since there is no dialogue, I consider the composer of the music almost like a co star of the film.  The composer of the score is a man named Alex Ebert.  He provides 45 minutes of music.  The opening instrumental piece is entitled "Excelsior".  This word means lofty or high,  This music is a reflection of the vastness of the ocean.  It is very soothing piece of music.
This soundtrack contains mostly instrumental pieces. They  reflect either  how serene or ominously dangerous life out in the open ocean can be.There is one song with words entitled "Amen" performed by Alex Ebert.  This song is a reminder about how everything in life is fleeting and transient.   All Is Lost about one man's fight for survival against the most adverse natural conditions.  All Is Lost is one of the best films of 2013

A man wakes up to find his tiny yacht sinking in the middle of the Indian Ocean. He's alone with no radio, but his experience and resourcefulness help him save the boat (until the next disaster strikes). Again and again, he uses every bit of knowledge he has to pump, patch, fix, and dry out. And that works...for a while.      This outstanding survival movie has just one character, Our Man, played by Robert Redford. He utters only a handful of words, there are no sentimental …
