Michael Howard's book for young job seekers is an absolute must for anyone trying to stand apart from their competition. Although primarily directed at young people in high school and college, the principles behind Howard's resume design tips are definitely applicable to everyone. The whole point is to stand out from the crowd, and Howard shows you how to do this in a number of ways.
Young people in particular have difficulty in attracting the interest of employers, mainly because their experience and education is all the same - high school or college at best, some babysitting, lawn care, and maybe a bit of volunteer experience. Most hiring managers (Howard was a retail hiring manager for a number of years) get tired of seeing the same old thing, over and over again.
Howard shows young job seekers how to best position their education and work experience on their resume, but also gives them ideas on how to include other, nontraditional selling features. Do you live close to the job site and can get there in a moment's notice? Do you have total availability throughout the summer when many of your colleagues are booking time off for vacation? Do you have a special knowledge of the industry - IE a movie buff applying to work at a cinema?
Not only does this book offer excellent tips and sample resumes, but it also has a worksheet that helps job seekers answer questions like those above, and more. I strongly suggest that any job seeker who is unhappy with their results, or anyone who is unsure as to whether their resume is truly selling them, get a copy of this book.
