Here is the plotline from the pilot episode, which set the stage for our favorite American hero to do a lot of good with few precious resources.
Opening gambit: On top of a vertical rock face encampment, MacGyver rescues a downed Air Force pilot in Central Asia from his Soviet captors. Contrary to his beliefs against using guns later in the series, MacGyver is seen using a gun in the beginning of the pilot episode. Main episode: After coming home, he is called in to rescue a group of scientists trapped in an underground New Mexico laboratory after a major explosion. The explosion causes a sulfuric acid leak that puts MacGyver in a rush with time before the acid leaks into the aquifer. It turns out that this explosion was not an accident; it was planned by one of the trapped scientist to prevent his ozone research from getting turned into a doomsday weapon. Macgyver survival techniques include using chocolate bars to plug the sulfuric acid leak (the sugar forms a sticky paste when it reacts with the acid) and making a hydrogen bomb to blow a hole in a wall (he puts sodium metal into a cold pill casing and drops it into a container of water).
Angus MacGyver, known as just MacGyver or Mac until the final season of the American spy television series MacGyver, is the highly intelligent, optimistic action hero played by Richard Dean Anderson. He prefers non-violent conflict resolution wherever possible and refuses to carry or use a gun. MacGyver works as a problem solver for the fictional Phoenix Foundation in Los Angeles. Educated as a scientist and with a background from a fictional United States government agency, the Department of External Services (DXS), he is used as a resourceful secret agent able to solve a range of problems. In addition to his scientific knowledge and inventive use of common items, he always carries a Swiss Army knife and duct tape.
