GREAT STORIES - LOVE IT

AVENGING SPIDERMAN VOL.1
MY FRIENDS CAN BEAT UP YOUR FRIENDS

Spider-Man has always been my favorite titles in the Marvel world since I first started reading comics. So any time a new title comes out I have to have it and that includes this book. "Avenging Spider-Man" was a title started that would team Spidey up with a new hero/hero's each issue similar to the "Marvel Team Ups" books. I was excited about this one more so than any book coming out at the time. Team ups are always entertaining and I knew this would be no exception.

This first volume is called "Avenging Spider-Man: My Friends Can Beat Up Your Friends" which is an excellent title and collects issues 1-5. All issues were written by Zeb Wells and I think he did a great job here as I enjoyed all of the stories and also felt that they were all different enough. Of course if you have read other reviews you know that the first three issues were drawn by Joe Madureira. The next two were by Greg Land and Leinil Francis Yu respectively but these two are not getting as much credit here. First I have to say that yes I agree with the majority that Joe's work is excellent, sharp, and feels fun. With that said I don't get the hate for the other two here. Zeb's to me feels like and brings me back to the 90's for some reason here and I absolutely love that, especially with the way Spidey looks. Yu's in my opinion is up there with Joe's as far as the overall look except it looks a little more real.

The first story features Spidey teaming with the Red Hulk on a mission to rescue J.J. from a Moloid army. It seems that something much more dangerous than maybe even The Mole Man lurks beneath the city. That means Spidey and all his famous wit must team with Red Hulk to bring whatever it is down. This first part of the book is probably the most fun as it is the more action packed of the three stories. The next though may be one of the more fun to read. This next one [issue 4] features Hawkeye and has the two going at it [kinda] to outdo one another. It is mostly Hawkeye here trying to prove himself because he is not a "super" hero, he is just a man with a bow. Because of this it feels more like his story but it is a good one. Finally we get the story with the Avengers which is all about Spidey's relationship or lack thereof with Captain America. Much like the last it is a more personal story except this time it feels more like Spidey's story.

In my opinion this is a great set and worth the price for anyone interested in it. All of the stories are good and feel different from one another. The art varies like others have pointed out but I enjoyed them all. Plus I liked all the stories here and found them to be very fun. We get action in all and some personal stuff as well. I say pick it up.

I was just telling Frank that I am a little out of touch with these Spidey titles since I don't pick them up since BRAND NEW DAY. I did finally pick up SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN and that was pretty fresh.
