I have been a Depeche Mode fan for just about 20 years. It would be safe to say that I am the biggest DM fan I know. Seen them in concert many times, have all their albums, countless remix CDs, posters, books, shirts and blah, blah, blah. So when I discovered that my wife to be was pregnant I gobbled this CD up.
This will be our first child and I must say that the idea of DM tunes translated to lullabies is a neat idea. Nevertheless, this reinterpretation can be tricky to pull off. I am happy to say that this CD is wonderful. There is a great selection of songs from the DM catalog. There are 14 songs on this CD, which are selected from 9 different albums, ranging from 1981 to 2006.
What I found refreshing was how peaceful some of these songs are when done in "lullaby style". I wouldn't say that DM has any "hard" songs, but some of their music can be a bit wild and loud. These lullabies are able to respect the integrity of the source material but make it totally baby friendly. Not to mention the parents (I) can hum along to this while I am trying to get my little one to sleep.
The entire album is lovely, but some standout tracks are "Precious", "Walking in My Shoes", "Martyr" and "Enjoy the Silence". I think that this is a great gift/idea for Depeche Mode fans who want to utilize soothing music that their newborn/baby will enjoy. And not for nothing, but the album art is kind of cute too.
