Usually works, but doesn't deserve that much hype.

When our daughter was just a tiny newborn and I was a new sleep deprived mother, I would try anything to calm her down. The first weeks were very hard on us, especially the first two before we found out she is allergic to milk protein. But even after that issue was resolved I don't know what bothered her, was it colic, acid reflux, gassineess? How do you know? Infants don't talk.

So it was late in the evening and another episode of 'I have no clue why she is crying'. My husband went to Rite Aid and according to my directions picked up what I thought was a magic potion, advertised very well by the way in every parenting magazine. Baby Bliss Gripe Water seemed to be venerated by many moms in all online reviews I read.

We administered the recomended dose and waited to see what happens. It worked, sort of, in about 10-15 minutes she calmed down more or less. She wasn't extaticly happy or anything, but a lot calmer. The stuff did speed up her bowel movements though, sometimes more than I wanted! But although it worked the first time, the results were inconsistant from then on. Sometimes it worked, other times did absolutely nothing. I am guessing it is because whatever bothered her wasn't always the same thing. Nevertheless I would not consider it as magical as advertised. Also, for teething I would much more highly recommend Hyland's Teething Tablets.

I can also compare this to Little Tummys Gripe Water which we also tried. I would say that Baby Bliss worked slightly better, it wins by maybe a point. The bigger advantage of Baby Bliss though is that it doesn't have to be refrigerated after opening and moreover that it doesn't have questionable ingredients. Little Tummys contains propylene glycol, propylparaben, and methylparaben. Not something to feed to a human, let alone an infant. Plus Baby Bliss contains organic ginger and fennel extracts unlike Little Tummys.

  • Organic active ingredients
  • Contains no alcohol
  • Convenient and easy to use dispenser
  • Good tasting (baby might even ask for it :)

  • Short shelf life (6 weeks after opening)
  • Very sticky and can get messy if you have a wiggly infant!
