Great nutrition starts in the womb. Then it continues through the baby's first years of life. In my opinion the biggest contributor to the current obesity epidemic is poor nutrition for pregnant mothers and their babies. When I was pregnant I didn't run to fast food joints just because I had a craving, neither did I snack on chips, fries, and processed food. I invested in Rainbow Light Prenatal Vitamins and was lucky to be pregnant all through the abundant local harvest of July through October. I ate so many fruits and vegetables, I don't think I had that many in my entire life!
The result? A baby who loves her fruits and veggies! This is not just a coincidence, I've talked to many other moms who keep saying that their baby eats what they ate throughout pregnancy. While I am starting mostly with veggies first so she doesn't get used to sweets, she does occasionally have a banana, watermelon, or apple. I feed most things to her mashed, but she loves to chew on things, especially now that she is teething. So I reached for the Baby Safe Feeder that we received as a baby shower gift.
This thing is genius and my infant fell in love with it instantly. The moment she sees me taking it out, she starts fluttering her legs like crazy! Here is the breakdown and the reasons for my rating.
Easy to use! Just drop in bag, put in food, and twist the handle on. Great for lazy moms.
Nearly eliminates the risk of choking. While there is always a risk, it feels great knowing that she can't bite a piece of the fruit off and you don't have to be constantly staring at the baby and checking to see if she's got a piece that is too big in her mouth.
Simple, functional, no frills design.
Inexpensive. A pack of 2 with 2 replacement bags costs about $11. Replacement bags are about $4 for 2.
It is really hard to clean the mesh bag. Even though you can get replacements, you want to reuse it as much as possible for less waste and more money savings. I found that even with very thorough five minute washings one bag lasts about 8 feedings. By then it looks pretty rotten (not literally, just ugly and stained). I guess there really isn't a way around that.
Not sure what the bag is, nylon I think? A synthetic material is not really good for chewing and sucking. Wish there was one with organic cotton, although that might be easier to chew through.
EcoMama Green Factor: +5 for re-usability and the fresh foods factor and +3 for non Eco-friendly materials. But I wonder, what else could you realistically make it out of?
