Bad Nauheim Forever!

Today I want to tell you something about a small town in Hesse, Germany.

Ok, it's small, but famous:
  • Elvis Presley has served his time here and a lot of signs of his presence are still there. The pictures for two album covers were shot in the old town, there is an Elvis Presley museum, an Elvis Presley stela, an Elvis Presley hotel room, the Elvis Presley private house and, of course, the annual European Elvis Presley Festival.
  • Bad Nauheim was and still is known for its salt works. In former times, the town mined "the white gold" for a pretty long time and the responsibles knew how to make profit of the salty springs. The "therme am park" still attracts a lot of people seeking for health and relaxation in hot saline water.
  • There are several pretty parks and grassed areas. Also, in 2010, the National Garden Festival of Hesse will take place in Bad Nauheim.
  • No other town can be compared to Bad Nauheim in regards of Art Nouveau. There are some really unique buildings, such as the Sprudelhof, the public library, the theater, the main station or the Beneke fount.
Of course, there are a lot more reasons why you should go and visit Bad Nauheim. I've been there last year in summer for two weeks, the weather was fine and we could do everything we wanted: swimming, biking, hiking, shopping, having good food, sightseeing, gambling, relaxing, having a picnic in the park, going to the theatre, watching a movie,... it was great fun.

If you're searching for accommodation in Bad Nauheim, I recommend you check if there's a convention or major event taking place in the period of your stay. Is so, you'd rather book a hotel in the surroundings of Bad Nauheim as room rates may be remarkably higher than in "normal" or low-season periods. So be flexible concerning your arrival and departure date and check rates daily via internet.
My wife and I stayed at hotel Bad Nauheim, a hotel in the city centre. We booked it over the internet. The room, the breakfast and the service were ok compared to the price we paid for it. Nothing superspecial, rather down-to-earth. :-)

I've never heard of Bad Nauheim before (I actually thought it was the name of a German metal band or something and that you were reviewing it for your metal community :P), but now I really want to visit it! What very cool tidbits of history. Thanks for sharing! :)

A German metal band? Indeed, that would be a really scary name for a band. ;-) What do they play then? Awful Kickass Hesse Teuton Metal! :-D Thank you for your review! Bad Nauheim is really worth a visit.

About this topic

Bad Nauheim is a town in the Wetteraukreis district of Hesse state of Germany. As of 2004[update], Bad Nauheim has a population of 30,365. The town is located approximately 35 kilometers (22 mi) north of Frankfurt am Main, on the east edge of the Taunus mountain range. It is a world-famous resort, noted for its salt springs, which are used to treat heart and nerve diseases. It is Bad Nauheim after which the Nauheim bath is named.  A Nauheim or "effervescent" bath is a type of spa bath through which carbon dioxied is bubbled.  This bath was one of several types of hydrotherapy  used at Battle Creek Sanitarium[4]  and it was also used at Maurice bathhouse, in Bathhouse Row in the early 1900s, during the heyday of hydrotherapy.

In the old town center of Bad Nauheim is the barn at the gate to the castle: The barn was used by Elvis Presley as the motif of a record cover. Elvis Presley lived in Bad Nauheim during his time with the United States Army in Friedberg. Other famous people who have stayed in the town include Franklin Delano Roosevelt (as a boy, FDR had been taken for several extended visits to Bad Nauheim where his father underwent the water cure for his heart condition) and the Saudi Arabian football team during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In addition, during World War II Hitler had a command complex in nearby Langenhain-Ziegenberg called Adlerhorst, "the Eagle's Nest" (not to be confused with Kehlsteinhaus of Obersalzberg, which was...
