I'm certainly not what I would consider a heavy beer drinker, but while I was carousing the shelves this past week at the corner grocery I noticed they have this 'buy six mix-and-match' program for beer drinkers. The long and short of it is basically you get to select any six bottles of beer from a variety of choices to make your own "custom six pack," and I thought that might be a way to give a try to some of these other unusual varieties.
This brings me to Batch 19.
All I could tell you about it before trying it was what I learned from the label: apparently, the concoction is "inspired by an authentic recipe with strisselspalt & hersbrucker hops." (That meant about as much to me as it might to the next casual drinker!) Otherwise, I was mostly interested in what a Pre-Prohibition beer might possibly taste like.
Well -- again, not a huge partaker of adult beverages -- this one I found surprisingly dry and bitter. It gives off a relatively robust aroma, but, on the tongue, all I can taste is the bark of its bitterness. It's certainly not the worst beer I've tried, but there's very little about it that would encourage me to try it (or buy it) again in the future.
Just not for me ...
