Trust him, he's a Doctor... Beats by Dre Solo bring the thunder.

This last Christmas I managed to acquire a couple Best Buy gift cards with the intention of picking up a set of Beats by Dr. Dre Studio edition headphones (see J.R.'s Beats vs. Bose Quiet Comfort Smackdown here).  After reading some reviews and shopping around I down graded to the Solo editions for several reasons

1) Price  ($179.99 for solos vs. $349 for studios)
2) Style and portability + they come in white!
3) Sound quality and performance look to be close to the studios but I'd be saving money by giving up the noise canceling feature of the studios (which meant all headphone use would require active batteries - also not appealing)

After a couple trips to Best Buy to find the Solo editions in white I came home with my pair just a couple days after Christmas.  After a solid month+ of use I'm really impressed with these headphones over all.

Pros:

Stylish, compact fold-up design, and durable w/ carrying case.

Features an integrated mic, iPod controls, and volume rocker.
   - Great for connecting to my Blackberry.  Can you here me now?  Yes!  I just can't hear myself talk with these bad boys over my ears :)

Bass brings the thunder, and over all sound is full and crystal clear.
  - I've found myself listening to a more varied music, ranging from Tiesto to Jay-Z to Alicia Keyes.
  - I feel like I'm totally immersed in the performance, almost as if the artist is playing right there with me.

While not true noise canceling like the studios or Bose Quiet Comfort, they do block out some external noise.  I've used these in loud Coffee Bean's and still get totally lost in my music & work without distraction.

Cons:

Still a moderate expense for headphones at $179.99

Sore ear lobes
    - I find after a couple hours or more of use my ear lobes can become sore from the "clamping" effect of the headphones on my ears.  It should be noted I have a huge head ( 7 3/4 fitted hat big) and the Beats just barely fit at full extension.

Sound leak --
    - Some reviewers have complained about these leaking a fair amount of sound.  I haven't noticed this to be much of a problem at all.  Maybe in this price tag range they do leak relatively more -- this is my first pair above free or $20 so I don't have a lot to compare to here.

Overall:

I would highly recommend these headphones within my scope of knowledge of headphones.  As mentioned this is my first high-end pair of headphones but I can say I'm really impressed and don't have any regrets.   For me the most important thing was a full, crisp sound with great detail and deep bass and these headphones pass that test with flying colors.

The very same one was recommended by Time magazine as one of the top travel gadgets in 2009. Sounds good to me although I don't fancy wearing headphones for long period of time...

They are great! I'd imagine some others might be a little more comfortable for long listening sessions but I sometimes wear these for 6-8 hours a day at work with no issues (other than hearing loss).

Great review Mike! My brother has these and swears they are the best purchase he has ever made. I saw this review over on the Facebook fan page for Lunch. It's getting serious love over there too! Great job!

Nice job on this, I don't own any set at all but if I did these would be in the running.

Well, if the Dr. thinks I need a pair of $200 headphones... then maybe I do :P  These put my Skullcandy Ink'd earbuds to shame!  Awesome review, Mike, that's nice that despite the cons, they're so great that you gave them a +5 anyways.  Must be good! :)

Wait, you don't NEED them? What's wrong with you? ;)

great review Mike! i wondered about the ears starting to hurt after a while with the small ones. I even get a little uncomfortable wearing the larger ones.
