Greatest anime ever

Berserk may not be one of those mainstream animes that everyone knows about.  But what I've found is that most people who watch this, say its one of the best, if not the best, anime they've ever seen.  I personally think its the best ever due to preference.

Berserk isn't like most anime where they throw in some humor/comedy here and there.  There's no bulging eyes or perverted comedy scenes like most animes out there.  This anime is straight up serious and has no time for humor.

Berserk is about a guy named Guts(sometimes referred to as gats, or gatsu).  He was born from a corpse and raised by a mercenary.  He was trained as a mercenary himself at a very young age and eventually learned how to swing a sword that was much too big for a boy his size.  He was very antisocial due to what happened to him as he was growing up.  He eventually bumped into a band of mercenaries that was around his age and eventually joined them, not by choice though.  He eventually befriends them and the epic journey begins.

All I can say is if you're into badass anime characters that just doesn't give a shit and just wants to cut down his enemies with a huge ass sword, then Berserk is the anime for you.  He's not gonna make you laugh or cry.  He's just gonna make you guess how many guys he's gonna cut down this time.

But one thing I should mention to you about Berserk is that the anime got cancelled after the first season because it was too gruesome apparently.  The manga is still going but the story takes a weird twist though.  Lets just say he's no longer battling inferior human soldiers anymore.  Its gotten much darker and sinister now.

With all that said, I give this anime a 5 and highly recommend it to people who enjoy watching action packed animes.

awright! another Berserk fan much like myself. I think I'll have to resort to Asian imports to get season 2, I know someone told me that there is a "bootleg" cut somewhere.... great write up!

Yea I'm such a huge fan of this. It was one of the first animes I watched. Before that it was just Dragon Ball Z and Ranma 1/2. At the time I didn't know much about anime but fell in love with this one instantly and have collected all the mangas ever since. And you mention season 2? I didn't know they had a season 2. I thought it got cancelled after the first season and its all mangas now only.

I was under the impression that it was, but my contacts in J-town told me that there are 2-5 episodes for season 2 that never saw their release. I think those episodes were made prior to its cancellation. It would be incomplete but I still would like to see them.

Yea, I can see how it might not be for everyone. I would say easily this is a hate it or love it type of anime. No in betweens. You have to be the type that likes to see the overpowered badass main characters. And you "might" enjoy it more when he grows up which should be around the 4th episode.

I watched the first few episodes of this show and found it to be interesting, but I couldn't quite get into it. It was definitely very dark and very serious... and, clearly I need to give it another shot, eh?

About this topic

Berserk's setting is inspired by medieval Europe. It centers around the life of Guts, an orphaned mercenary warrior, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk. As he ages, Guts changes from a solitary boy to a man who realizes the value of comradeship. The story contains elements of both fantasy and horror, as it explores both the best and worst of human nature. Both the manga and anime are noted for their heavy violence.
