I can imagine the pitch meeting for Better With You pretty clearly. I'm sure the creators said it was a new spin on the couples sitcom. "Think Friends but with family instead!" "It's a multi-generational Mad About You!" It all sounds good on paper, until you film and realize there's nothing "new" here no matter how much you "spin" it.
Joanna Garcia (apparently reprising her role from Reba) plays a young, dimwitted gal who finds herself "hilariously" unprepared for her sudden pregnancy and quickie marriage to her equally young, far more dimwitted beau. Lucky for her she has a ridiculously codependent, overbearing "alternative" sister and dysfunctional parents. You know what? Strike my first paragraph. The pitch meeting was probably "We basically want to reboot Reba, minus the annoying stepmom."
I appreciate ABC trying to bring back the sitcom, but this is a huge failure. The funny moments fall flat. The touching moments are heavy-handed. There is nothing I want to know about these characters and I doubt the birth of a newborn is going to help that.
Save the space on your dvr for something else. This one's all sit- without the -com.
