Monte Reel introduces me to the fascinating life and achievements of Paul du Chaillu with this book. Paul du Chaillu was the first white person to explore Africa and write about his experiences in the mid nineteenth century.

Paul du Chaillu's research in his first book was criticized for the lack of professional details in it. This motivated him to expand his knowledge in the fields of geography, astronomy and photography. I admire his work ethic to become a more professional in his work. His second book about his explorations in Africa was successful as a result. Paul du Chaillu also wrote a book about living in Scandanavia and also studied Russian later in his life. His life was full and exciting.

I love the influence that Paul du Chaillu's work had on popular culture. There are poems and words to dances created to honor the gorilla. I find this amusing, because I do not find anything beautiful about gorillas. I admire Monte Reel's skill as a researcher in finding these references. Paul du Chaillu's work was the inspiration for the film King Kong and the novels of Jack London.

I wish this book came with a map of Gabon in Africa. It would be interesting to see exactly where Paul du Chaillu travelled. Monte Reel sparks my curiosity to learn. Some of the references in this book in the fields of astromony and literature. Paul du Chaillu also wrote a series of children's books about gorillas. I have never read a children's book about gorillas. It would be fun to read. I have never taken an astronomy class before, but Reel makes a reference to a group of three stars called the Sword of Orion. I am interested in learning more about astronomy because of this scientific reference. Monte Reel also makes reference to a stringed instrument called the ombi. It is made from the roots of a tree. I found this book to be entertaining as well as informative.
