The novel Bloodhound by Tamora Pierce has become my favorite book that I've ever read, I would recommend this to any fan of fantasy. It is set in the low town of Corus in a medieval realm. The main character's name is Beka Cooper, 17 years old and she is a medieval "Dog", the equivalent of a police officer. Although she is in her late teens, she has real life emotions that people can relate to. I believe that many teenagers would enjoy this book because it is enhanced with a bit of romance.
This enticing novel is very funny and entertaining, yet it teaches life lessons through the diary of a young girl. In first person it shows the inner workings of a young woman's mind as she mentally fights with herself and tries to keep up with the world.
Like all of Tamora Pierce's books, it is set along the lines of 'girl legend in the making.' There are very strong female characters that represent female power in all situations, along with developed, very realistic characters, both male and female.
The plot progresses as Beka has to go against some of her roots and deal with strong magic that she had acquired when she was a young child, working out deals with both the Mother Goddess and the Black God. There are many different gods that are important to the plot, along with all different types of magic. Fantasy lovers, rejoice! When I was introduced to this author at age 11 I was in heaven. This is a truly original work of art.
