When I wrote my book Winter Fitness: Mastering Life Through Love of the Slopes, I dedicated a major chapter to the Bosu Balance trainer. The Bosu, which bears a weird resemblance to an elephants diaphragm, as in birth control device is probably one of the most innovative fitness inventions of the decade. No wonder it's the training tool of choice for the US Ski Team.
The word "Bosu" is an acronym for "both sides up" or "both sides utilized. " Prior to its creation, elite athlete wannabes were performing stupid human tricks, such as standing on a stability ball. When the ball decided that it wanted to roll, which after all, is what it is designed to do, pop went the ACL of the aspiring athlete. Bad career move, dude!
So enter the Bosu. Stand on the dome side, and your proprioception is challenged. How do I need to align my feet so that I don't fall off this thing?
Turn the ball over, and you've got a wobble board, which will challenge your dynamic balance. need to add some pizazz to your Pilates workout, without paying for expensive equipment classes? The Bosu, which looks like the Pilates barrel, provides the perfect solution.
Don't have room for a weight bench? You can perform both incline and decline presses on the Bosu.
