"Deep Throat", the Song

  • Feb 27, 2010
I don't care.

Nor is it that much a mystery to me and the revelation as many speculated would be a letdown.

Remember a few years ago when we all finally learned who the infamous "Deep Throat" was?  Do you remember anyone who cared afterward?  I honestly don't even remember the guys name, and you don't have to bother telling me.

The mystery was around for a long time, who it could be, who burned or angered Simon into penning her pop hit, for years it was thought to be Warren Beaty, Kris Kristopherson, Mick Jagger even James Taylor her husband, many wondered but Simon wasn't telling.  Only a select few in Dick Ebersol who won a charity auction to learn the secret and Howard Stern knew the answer and finally Simon has let the air out of the balloon:

David Geffen.  Is the mystery man.  HE is who You're So Vain is about.

There, do you still care?

I didn't grow up in the 70's, I didn't become a fan of Simon until years ago and never even knew there was a mystery when I became a fan and now...........it doesn't affect my love of the song that much but now that I know I will try not to let the song fade into obscurity.

What did you think of this review?

About this topic

"You're So Vain" is a song written and performed by Carly Simon, released in December 1972. The song is a critical profile of a self-absorbed lover that Simon asserts is "so vain" that she believes he "thinks the song is about [him]." Simon never revealed who the song was based on but in 2010 she gave the subject's first name as "David". This led to speculation that David Geffen was the song's target though a representative for Simon wouldn't confirm that.

On Feb 26, 2010 Mark and Brian [KLOS LA morning show hosts] said according to a rather creepy backwards-whispered "David" -- as incorporated into a re-recorded version of the 1972 hit on her latest album 'Never Been Gone', released in the UK next week (March 2010) -- it's Simon's former Elektra boss David Geffen. Supposedly, the singer resented the record exec for the attention he lavished on Elektra/Asylum label-mate Joni Mitchell.  However, Elektra and Asylum would not merge until a year after the song was released and at least two other names, including "Warren," are also hidden in the new version of the song.
