Famous animation critic

A Quick Tip by RabidChihuahua

Charles Solomon is like the Roger Ebert of animation, his opinions are held to really high regard, yet sometimes, he has the stupidest reasons for liking or hating certain animated titles, and not to mention that his reasoning for rating certain titles is inconsistent (such as scolding Burn Up Excess for its tonal whiplash, yet praises Trigun, which also suffers from that detestable aspect). Take his reviews with a HUGE grain of salt, as there's quite a few animated titles that he hates (for bad reasons) that I found to be really good, and inversely several that he gushed over that I found to be garbage.

I think I hate this guy a little more than you do, and yeah, for the exact same reasons. I can understand him in some ways with Trigun over Burn Up Excess, simply because the latter is far more silly. But his opinions definitley clash with each other to the point where it's downright annoying.

Exactly. Why can't critics have a consistent basis for rating stuff? Aside from Solomon's clashing opinions, just like Ebert, he tends to praise animated titles that are deemed "classic" by legions of people just to fit in with the status quo (such as Tenchi Muyo). This is so because if you look at some of the reviews, he'll disregard the flaws in them in which he otherwise wouldn't for titles that don't have large fanbases.

That's precisely what gets on my nerves about him. Based on things he said, he should despise Akira and Elfen Lied.

Strangely enough, he praises Akira, but despises Elfen Lied.

Seriously, every time I read one of his reviews it makes me want to throw sharp objects at random targets. I can't stand him and I don't understand how a true critic can fail so miserably at being objective. As far as series go, I feel like he watches maybe, *maybe* two episodes total befoe telling people how much he hates it. I have never read such unbalanced reviews. Aren't we supposed to consider everything - the good and bad points of a movie or series? And he gets paid to do this. It really boggles my mind.

To Rabid: I remember him not knocking Elfen Lied for the silly shit 5 years ago. If he changed his mind, then that's new to me.

To Stormy: I hear you loud and clear. I remember a girl on amazon from Britain (forgot her name), who once believed the exact same thing. She even went so far to say that she believes he only watches the trailers. His reviews have no type of balance at all. How he's getting paid for his hack reviews is indeed a mystery.

I remember him reviewing Elfen Lied vol. 1 and he said something along the lines of "Elfen Lied embodies everything that gives anime a bad name." I'd cite the webpage for it, but it looks like Amazon deleted the product page for that DVD, but I clearly remember seeing it.

Hmm. I didn't see that for the series back then. But oh well... He's still a hack though.

It's kinda funny now that I think about it. Everytime I read about something he hates, I can be reasonably sure I'll like whatever it is. I don't really see the point in being a critic if you don't like anything you watch. I guess the money is that good. It's been a while, but I did a search on him hoping to find some contact info, a website or blog or...something. Only thing I found was some interview where he said how much he loves anime in general which sounded so disingenuous.  Seems like he likes Disney movies quite a bit, which is fine, but on the other hand he seems to go out of his way to pan just about every anime title out there.

Solomon only seems to praise stuff that's already popular, and usually dismisses titles that aren't. Admittedly, I also don't like most anime I see, but at least you can respect the fact that I'm not inconsistent with my reasoning. Also, something I found hilarious about Solomon the Hack is that for someone whose seen so much anime, he doesn't have a good comprehension of Japanese culture. I say this because he spat on Doomed Megalopolis for being "poorly-animated misogynistic garbage," despite the fact that Japan's culture is quite misogynistic (especially in the timeframe DM took place). Along with you and MadPenguin, I also think Solomon should be stripped of his job.

-Stormy: I'll tell you this much; With the childish anime directors out there who are churning out more and more garbage on a weekly basis (High School of the Dead and Needless immediately come to mind), you have to admit that he does have a strong argument. Many folks consider me the hardest of the hardcore when it comes down to anime, and even I don't really give a damn about it anymore. I considered 70% of it garbage about 3 years ago. The number has swelled up since then. These directors are jam packing every single anime cliche into these titles with no type of sense and the otakus are just eating them up. But the problem with him, he contradicts himself on the titles he praise and rip apart. You can't praise Akira for its use of violence, and then pan Doomed Megalopolis for the same reason. If you hate the latter for the hentai elements alone, then say that's your reason.

-Rabid: That's the whole thing right there. He over looks whatever flaws the sacred cows may have, and pan the others. If he said something along the lines, "these elements were fine back then, but now they're a dime a dozen". That would make sense. But then you'll have to look at how those elements are used in the newer stuff.

Oh I fully agree that there's just too much crap out there these days. And I know that you are a harsh critic, but you know, I respect that because you're also fair and consistant. Personally speaking, I hardly ever pay attention to the professional critics. Whenever I have I've been disappointed. I didn't mean I love everything I watch because I don't, but I do my best to consider the whole thing (unless it's something awful from the get go, like Mouse ^^).  Granted I focus a lot on the characters and I do tend to over look things if I like the characters, but still, I try to be fair and objective. There isn't really anything that blows me away anymore, but I do enjoy watching anime over all.  It's good for me because my weekends are very long and a 120 minute DVD is a good way to help me pass the time while I have my luch.   And so it does get under my skin when he tears into one of my favorites with what I usually feel is an unfair bias. Familiar of Zero is far from perfect, same goes for Kaze no Stigma, but I don't recall he ever mentioned one good thing about either, only commenting about how annoying the female main characters were (which would have been fair if he didn't sound like he was talking about an ex-wife or ex girlfriend), and how stupid the plots are.

Warning: This review contains potential spoilers for various anime titles critiqued by Charles Solomon. These were included for the sake of being able to elaborate on why I think Solomon's opinions are false.      I've only known about animation critic Charles Solomon for only a few years, but after finding out about him, most of his opinions on animation (anime especially) has rubbed me the wrong way. At first, I thought it was just disagreements in tastes and opinions. …
