Core Performance Center - You get what you pay for

I have been training at Core Performance Center (www.coreperformancecenter.com) for about 6 months now. I have always used strength training as a complement to triathlon/endurance sports training, but I was beginning to experience nagging injuries (Achilles, rotator cuff, etc) from overuse and needed something different and more specific. I found myself at Core Performance Center because I believe in the training principles of Mark Versteegen and his work at Athletes Performance (www.athletesperformance.com).

Core Performance Center is located at 2020 Santa Monica Blvd. in Santa Monica and I can guarantee you it is like nothing you have ever seen. There are 17 identical "stations", each known as a C-Pro, their propietary hardware that look like a Transformer robot. In the middle of the machine is a monitor that tells you - and shows you - exactly what to do with each exercise. This portion of the workout is 35 minutes long. and takes you through a wide range of core strengthening exercises. What makes this routine unlike any other, and also perfect for an endurance athlete or anyone looking to get into shape, is that it is not only NOT a weight routine, it is geared toward building intelligent, balanced strength. It will not lead to becoming muscle-bound or risk of injury.

After the strength portion you head to one of 17 cardio machines for a 25 minute, pre-programmed cardio session. 25 minutes may seem too short, but their programs are challenging and take your heart rate up and down, giving you the ideal workout in a short amount of time.

Core Performance is a great workout center staffed by friendly and knowledgable coaches. I highly recommend everyone see it, but I can't necessarily say joining is for everyone. Why?

Because it is really, really expensive. When they first opened monthly rates were in the $700 range, roughly the cost of a studio apartment.  Between the economy and low membership rates, they have been offering packages in the $300/monthly range, but as odd as this may sound, that is actually a good deal. I will say this - anyone who is paying a personal trainer and is anywhere near the area needs to at least come check the place out. Between the personalized program on the screen and the 2-4 coaches on the floor at all times, you end up getting a private session each time you train.

And in the end, the place is just cool. Check it out!
