Craig Morrison Jumping "Fences" to Bring Debut Album to Nashville

The newest Aussie-turned-Nashvillian, Craig Morrison, released his debut album on May 1.  He’s no doubt hoping to follow in Keith Urban’s footsteps, but frankly, I’m just not sure he’s ready.

Hopefully not to be confused with the already well-known name Craig Morgan, Morrison’s soft voice may not be unique enough to tip off a listener to know right away who he is when they turn on the radio.  Similarly, the first three tracks on his album, including his first single “Fences” are not much different from every other song already on radio.  These tracks and others have a demo-quality to them rather than being radio-ready.

“Where I’m At”, despite being written by some of my favorite Nashville songwriters, carries with its forgettable title the cliché theme of not wanting to change anything about your past even if you had the opportunity.  “Doin’ Country”, penned by Morrison and his wife, has also been ‘done’, this time with less imagery, describing what anyone would think of when they think of being in the country and country music.

I do enjoy “Somebody’s Girl”, though not necessarily very well written.  It is a moving and romantic tune that probably every girl would love to have written about her, and nicely placed in the middle of the track list.

Morrison may find success in Nashville if he finds some killer songs for his next album, but he definitely needs to take it up a notch if he’s going to make a career-changing transition from Australia to the U.S.  Check out the album for yourself on iTunes, get a free track by joining his mailing list on his website, follow him on Twitter, or find him on Facebook for tour updates!
