Flight Simulation In Anticipation Of Real Life Experiences

Cubs to Bonanzas by Richard A. Komm is an
interesting conversation on the vagaries of
learning how to fly a plane. Komm provides
a significant personal history starting from
the time gasoline sold for a quarter/gallon
to his accelerated graduation from Washington
University after just two years.

Komm relates various flights which provided more
than a modicum of high drama. His flight from
Elko to Reno was one of them. The plane accumulated
ice on the wing and communication was lost temporarily
with the ground. Finally, the plane landed with the
help of a vehicle stationed strategically below.

The author relates a very thorough delineation of
his experience in restoring an airplane. The effort
included ordering the parts manual. Next, engine seals
were replaced and the cylinder compression was made
airworthy together with many other systems.

The Appendix of the book has an exhaustive paper on
managing spatial disorientation when individuals are
under great stress in an emergency situation. Essentially,
an individual must learn to reorient the body to an
equilibrium so that rational thinking patterns can prevail.
The natural propensity to panic occurs in emergencies which
appear to deteriorate quickly. Komm provides ample evidence
of these types of occurrences in his book.

Overall, the author's efforts to simulate the experiential domain
of flying is a success. This book should be read by anyone who
plans to fly a plane so that preventive strategies can be
articulated well in advance of any real dangers in flight.
