A girl's best friend?!

It's been said diamond is forever and is a girl's best friend. After having seen some of the divorces in the world and some of the biggest investment banks gone bust, I think I'd consider diamond a friend indeed! Out of the many investments I hold, it is diamond that's constantly by my side. Well, because I wear it daily, that's why. It's just a small pendant but it does keep me company all day long, even in my shower! :-) [Now, stop your imagination from running wild!!!]

I am not really into diamonds as you might think. Granted, I love looking at them and browsing in the stores, but mostly because of the spectacular designs that jewelers are able to come up with. It's the design, baby, not the diamond! It's like if a guy buys me one, well, it's the thought, not the amount of money he paid for (although I do have expensive taste, LOL)! Having said that, I think every girl should buy herself a diamond jewelry (albeit one that she can afford with her own money!). That is something that you give to yourself and if you buy it in the first year of your working life, it is a great memento which you will keep for a long time to come. It is a sign of accomplishment and something you reward yourself with. Do not, under any circumstances, cheapen yourself by buying a crystal or fake diamonds and passing that as real diamonds!!! Crystals are fine by itself but know that it is crystal and not diamonds that you bought. I like crystals, esp. Swarovski but it is not the same as buying a diamond at all!

When I just graduated years ago, there is a saying in Singapore that a woman would look for 5Cs in a man before she'd agree to his proposal of marriage. 
  1. Condominium
  2. Car
  3. Certificate (a degree)
  4. Cash
  5. Carat (i.e. diamond)

Well, now you know why lots of women in Singapore are not married ;-)

As for the 5Cs of a diamond, it is these:
  1. Carat (weight) : 1 carat = 1/5 gram = 200 mg = 100 points (1 oz = 132 carats)
  2. Color : Colorless & whitish ones are most expensive & extremely rare
  3. Clarity : Scale range from FL, IF, VVS, VS to SI (FL - flawless is most precious & expensive)
  4. Cut : Round brilliant cut is most popular. Marquise, oval, pear, heart shaped are fancy cuts.
  5. Certificate : If they come with certificates from GIA or International Gemological Institute, then they are more salable.

So, now that you've the basic facts about diamonds, you can start shopping! I suggest you go to a reputable firm and do make sure you get a certificate as well. Most importantly, buy what you can afford and truly like the sight of! It is imperative that you like something not because it is fashionable but because it speaks to your heart. Diamonds is forever, afterall. & there is no going back once a decision is made! Don't believe the talk about prices of diamonds appreciating. It might be true for the jewelers but there is no way for you to sell it higher than the price you bought for, unless you are the Queen of England or something. Shop around and look for the right one like you'd look for your partner in life!

Great review! The only diamonds I wear are in my engagement ring that's been in my family since 1902. I hope they're conflict free but, they're probably not :( To all the guys and gals getting diamonds out there, make sure yours are conflict free.

My wife believes that diamonds are at least best friend. She would not say yes until she saw the bling bling ring. great job

I've heard of the 5 C's of a diamond, but the 5 C's of a man? Oh man.... ;)  Great review!  Diamonds are a girl's best friend :)

 In mineralogy, diamond (from the ancient Greek adámas, meaning "proper" or "unalterable") is an allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. Diamond is the second most stable form of carbon, after graphite; however, the conversion rate from diamond to graphite is negligible at ambient conditions. Diamond is specifically renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms.
