THe original DOom is one of the biggest trend setters in gaming ever. Walk down corridors with your gun, and if it movies shoot it. It's the big daddy of FPS games. Sure Wolfenstein came before it, but Doom is the king baby.
DOOM II came out not too long later and kept the adage, if it ain't broke don't fix it, only make it cooler and it did, more levels and more power ups for more destruction. All the games had a recurring theme of the forces of Hell invading Earth and the Marine's base on the moons of Mars. Doom 3 is more of a reimagining of the first Doom, but with the fast gameplay toned down for more of a survival horror feel.
This is one of those games where you want to invest in a new graphics card ASAP to take advantage of the sights. This game is every bit as violent as the old DOOM games were so this game isn't for the squeamish as your shotgun blasts will turn your foes into visccera in a second all with crimson blood red splotches on the wall.
Not for the squeamish? Damn straight. This game is atmospheric, so much so that you could patch up the ozone with this game. The lights twinkle on and off, most of the game is in the shadows and there is rarely any music putting you right in the thick of an invasion of Hell's forces. Ghostly laughs taunt you, horrific visions will terrify you and if the lights go out suddenly you better be ready cause Hell's forces will find you. You will find data disks with people who talk to you to tell you about what went on before the invasion and even codes to open locked doors for power ups. Some might see this as something to get in the way, but it only adds more to the atmosphere. Your listening to crew members talk of the creatures and everyday life and when your done, oh yeah, I'm all alone... with creatures trying to kill me.....just like those victims.....
The control isn't bad. You can jump in this game and toggling through weapons is as easy as it ever was. The new convention of having to reload your gun is now in this game. New features include working computer screens and buttons for access to different portions of the stage. The worst is having to always have that flashlight ready to see in the many darkened areas of the game, hearing a growl and then trying to scramble for a safe place to blow whatever it was away.
Oh, and in this game you do take a trip to the unholy neatherregions of Hell and this time, IT LOOKS LIKE HELL. People are screaming in agony, fire, gargoyles, wailing. Repent now because no game has ever given me a more unsettling experience then this one, which has made repeat playings difficult. If your like me, you will play this for 10 minutes at a time before losing your nerve and have to play some more later. Some parts of the game are easiar for me to get through, but none of them had the Spiders in them. I HATE THOSE SPIDERS.
The biggest downfall is the gameplay. The old DOOM games had you run down tunnels and into open areas and you could spray your fire away to kill some demon butt and have a blast, here you mainly have one path to follow with very little change up.
DOOM was at one time the innovator but time passed it by and other games like Half Life and Halo now reign the world of FPS games. DOOM 3 while nice is long on style and comes up short in the substance dept. But when I say long on style, it's long. I'm serious, the game looks that good and feels erie. It doesn't play badly but it's The Godfather III in the trilogy of Doom games.
