Eli Young Band Shines With "Life at Best"

The Texas country boys of the Eli Young Band released their latest album, "Life at Best," in August to an audience of eager fans, both old and new. They've been huge on the Texas country music scene for years, but didn't break into the mainstream until 2008 when their hit "Always The Love Songs" cracked the top 10 on the Billboard hot country chart. However, behind the release of the album's lead-off single, "Crazy Girl" (which happens to be their highest charting single to date, peaking at #6 on the charts), the Eli Young Band is ready to show country fans what they're made of.

"Life at Best" is a 14-song collection of songs mostly co-written by the band members themselves. It debuted at #3 on the Billboard hot country chart and at #6 on the all-genre Billboard 200. While the guys have definitely begun to make a name for themselves outside of the Lonestar state, the question remains: do they have the staying power it takes to beat the success of "Crazy Girl," or have they peaked?

I believe that we've only seen the beginning of Eli Young Band's success. There are three songs on this record that stand out for me: "Skeletons" (a song about confessing the mistakes of your past), "Recover" (an uplifting song about never giving up, despite your circumstances, because you one day you WILL recover), and "How Quickly You Forget," the latter being my favorite track on the entire album. I love the way it sounds sonically, and the verse has a haunting feel that gives me chills. Two more noteworthy songs are "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" and "I Love You."

Overall, the guys did a great job with this record. I'm not 100% sure I love it as much as their previous release, "Jet Black and Jealous," but it's still a very solid album from start to finish. It's definitely worth taking a listen to. Also, they are fantastic in concert and some of the nicest guys in the business. That always helps. If you want to catch them out on the road, check out their tour dates online to see if they're coming to a city near you.
