Hilary Cantor is a desperate woman. Her ex-husband is a deadbeat dad who had left her with a huge mortgage and their special needs son, who needs expensive schooling. On top of that Hilary loses her job and doesn't know how she will get out of her mounting debt. Driving home after getting nowhere with her ex, she happens on an opportunity and takes it. A man has crashed his car and when Hillary goes to his aid, she realizes he is already dead but next to him is a satchel that can make all of Hilary's financial woes go away.
As in most of Mr. Gross's books the main character usually makes a bad choice that sets a roller coaster of bad events in motion. This story is no different. Instead of ignoring the satchel, Hilary's choice will put her and her son in danger as well as other people she doesn't know. Along the way she will befriend Patrick Kelty, who has his own demons to contend with. Patrick will need to help Hilary and her son as well as stave off his own problems.
This is a thriller that runs at a nice pace and never gets so fast that you need to catch your breath. The story also shows you how good people can be driven to do wrong things out of desperation to protect their families. The author also shows how even more than a year later, those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy are still feeling its effects.
This is not the author's best books but it is a well written and fairly good thriller.
