Exactly like one piece except its about mages

To be honest with you, I've never heard of Fairy Tail until recently.  I was just bored and wanted another manga to read after catching up with Claymore, Berserk, and Vinland Saga.  I went on www.onemanga.com to see what other popular ones that I'm missing and from the list of top 4, only I haven't read or watched, Fairy Tail.

At first glance, the art work looks exactly like One Piece.  In fact, I mistakened it for One Piece originally because the main characters from both mangas look a like.  After doing some research online, one of the forums mentioned that the artist for Fairy Tail happens to be the student of the one for One Piece.  Not sure how credible that source was though.

The story starts off with a young mage girl, Lucy who's a summoning mage, wandering the city reading a magazine about mages.  In the magazine it mentions her favorite guild that she hopes to join one day, Fairy Tail.  Fairy Tail is known for causing trouble all the time and are a constant concern of the mage council (Just think powerful mages that uphold the law).  She ends up bumping into a boy mage, Natsu on the street.  Natsu helped her out inadvertently and she offers to treat him to a meal.  He accepts without hesitation and thanks her after the meal.  Lucy gets into a bind a little later and gets rescued by Natsu.  Natsu also turns out to be from the guild Fairy Tail and offers to invite Lucy in after realizing she wants to join.  Lucy of course accepts immediately and the story from there continues.

I must say, that the easiest way to tell if this manga is for you or not is by asking yourself one simple question, "Do you like One Piece?".  Besides from the artwork being very similar, the story, plot, charcater, humor and even the fight scenes are very similar to One Piece.  Natsu actually would remind you about Luffy from One Piece because of the way he looks, act, and how he treats his nakamas.  The most important thing to Natsu, and everyone else from Fairy Tail, is their guild mates.  If you haven't read or watched One Piece before, then I would say you'll know if this is for you or not easily by the first few volumes.

I really enjoy One Piece so that's the reason why I would highly recommend this manga to anyone.  If you're not a manga fan but enjoy the one piece anime, then you're in luck because the anime just started and I think they're barely at episode 3 or 4 right now (currently 11-02-2009).

I can't say that I'm a fan of ONE PIECE but anything manga always interests me. Thanks for the shout out on onemanga.com, I'll that site out. Manga is pretty pricey here at Borders at times. Great review! Nice to see you reviewing again, bud.

Thanx. I have a few others I wanna review but don't have time right now. But yea, I love to read stuff on onemanga.com and if I really like it, I support it by purchasing them when they have the english ones for sale. You should definitely check it out if you're into mangas. That way, you can make sure the ones you do buy are well worth your dollar. Especially with so many out there you'd go broke buying everyone one of em. And its also a great way to know about all the hundreds/thousands of different manga series out there.
