I think featuring the communities is a great idea, but it should be totally random and not based on any preference or popularity.

hm how come I missed this before? well, we know that this is probably outdated now...

Not necessarily. Certain communities are still given more exposure then others even if the former feature on the homepage has been altered since.

The word 'featured' gives the impression that they are the best, should just say 'communities'. Communities should be featured at random.
