A fun evening even for someone who isn't incredibly fond of art, music, walking, or Venice
Jul 7, 2009
On the first Friday of each month, the art galleries on Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice stay open till around 10 PM. Many hire musicians and put out a bit of food, and thousands of people descend to explore the galleries and listen to some music.
I'm not a huge fan of walks, crowds of people, art, music, or even Venice (though I like all of those things except crowds). I still had a great time. Since you are outdoors and near the cool ocean water, the huge crowds aren't nearly as suffocating as they might be in say CostCo. The galleries are mostly in interesting buildings, and have such a wide diversity of art that you are almost certain to find some of the work fascinating. They frequently hire musicians, which adds to the atmosphere. The one problem we had was finding a sit down restaraunt -- most had 1.5 to 2 hours waits. There is plenty of food available from vendors if you don't want to sit down, but if you do, you should call ahead and make a reservation.
Parking is also a bit of a nightmare, so we parked in Santa Monica and took the #2 bus in, which worked extremely well (1.50/person round trip).
