If Your Sobriety Does Not Affect What You Do Should It Matter?

Whip (Denzel Washington) is a pilot who is shown that he is both a heavy drinker and a cocaine user. He heads to work and right after take-off the plane is hit with an incredible amount of turbulance. The co-pilot seems to panic but Whip maintains his cool and is able to get out of the bad air to more calm air up above.
He then makes an announcement to the passengers that there is no beverage service available on the flight.

Whip decides to take a nap and tells the co-pilot to take over. About an hour later something seems to snap on the plane jerking Whip awake. The plane seems severely damaged and is going down. Whip tells the copilot to dump fuel and engage the landing gear to try to slow the descent of the plane. It finally seems to level off but is gliding upside down. Whip manages to bring the plane down in a field and blacks out during the "crash-like" landing.

He wakes to learn that only six persons perished but his actions have saved the rest of the passengers and crew. He is a hero to the public but until the determination of what happened to the plane can be finalized, he is under suspicion, especially because his blood level was shown to have a high alcohol content.

Later investigation will show that Whip is probably the only pilot that could have possibly landed the plane, given what went wrong. The movie asks the question, should it matter that Whip was drunk if his condition had nothing to do with what happened to the plane and didn't hinder Whip from saving the people.

Whip is not a nice person. He has alienated his ex-wife and his son with his drinking and cocaine use and he doesn't seem to care. His best friend seems to be a drug dealer (John Goodman) and even though he is warned to stop drinking while he is being investigated, he doesn't seem to care.

Whip befriends a woman with a drinking problem who goes to AA to try to get sober and gets Whip to comee with her but even that doesn't get through to him about his own problem. Whip is not a likeable person and it is hard to root for him to get cleared of the charges against him. Washington gives his usual excellent performance though he has played several characters in the past with similar attitude issues. This is a really good film but the fact that I really didn't like Whip kept me from giving a full five stars.

Washington is always good in almost any movie, even when a character isn't that good, he still manages to pull off a performance. I have to make time to see this...

'Flight' Starring Denzel Washington Never Quite Soars (Video)

Exciting but flawed movie
A routine plane flight has a catastrophic malfunction, but the alcoholic, drugged pilot miraculously saves many lives. Now the question is: How will his additions affect the crash investigation?      Denzel Washington plays the pilot and gives an outstanding performance. He's utterly charismatic, sympathetic, and a pleasure to watch. Though his character is troubled and weak, I was rooting for him. The plane emergency is so real and scary, you'll never want to fly …
