Nice camera, fussy charging, minimal editing software

First, I am very impressed by the quality of the video and audio from the Mino HD. I have used it in a variety of situations, and the picture and sound were always clear. The performance in lower light is also good. I like how you can set whether or not "recording" LED, a red glow from behind the microphone grilles, illuminates and whether or not there is a sound when recording starts.

The FlipShare software I am somewhat less enamored of. It's easy to use, and you can assemble clips to form a movie which you can then "share" to a variety of social networking services, but the most you can do for editing is trim a video, though you can create multiple trimmed clips from one video. There's no lighting or color adjustment possible.

I tested the export to Facebook. This worked, but there was little to no indication in the program of what it was doing until it was finished. Still, it was a simple operation.

It is somewhat disappointing that you can no longer "export" a video to a format other than MPEG4. If you want AVI or WMV or MPEG2, you'll have to use an external converter. This capability, which had been in earlier versions of FlipShare, was removed by Cisco.

Charging the Mino HD is problematic. I found that it would not charge from most of the AC-USB power supplies I had in the house, not even one for the finicky iPhone. Of course, Cisco will be glad to sell you a charger which is rather large. I did happily discover, though, that the charger that came with my new Jawbone Icon worked.

I have seen many complaints about the flip-out USB connector which lent its name to the Flip line. I do appreciate that it is integral and not a separate cord, though the way the camcorder hangs from the USB jack does not inspire a lot of confidence. I worry that this will break at some point.

The Mino HD uses a "mini HDMI" connector. A compatible cable is sometimes sold with the Mino HD as a bundle, but not with mine. You can buy one as a branded Flip accessory, or somewhere else, but they are not yet commonplace.

I did like the tripod socket and used the Mino HD to record a short video of myself for work. This is not the ideal application, since all the controls were on the back side where I could not see them, but it did work out in the end.

The battery appears to hold its charge well if you turn the Mino HD fully off (press and hold the power switch).

I recently moved my Mother from out of state to be near me. Family members where she previously lived wanted to stay in contact. I selected and chose to review the Flip MinoHD model M2120 to record and send video messages from her to those family members.    The Flip MinoDH is a completely self contained compact video camera. The install file for the supporting FlipShare software is stored on the camcorder, and can be installed to a host PC as needed. The Camcorder has recording …

Flip MinoHD Camcorder (2nd Generation, 2 Hours, Brushed Metal) delivers solid video and audio quality (better than most cell-phone camcorders). It is also very easy to use. Open the box and start shooting and uploading videos in no time. It comes with built-in memory for 120 minutes of video recording, which is plenty for day-to-day video recording. Flip MinoHD main appeal is its simplicity and portability (practical to carry or put in pocket, or when you need to pack light). While using Flip MinoHD …

I've got several camcorders, some old, some new, one that's quite nice. The only one I have on me all the time is my Flip. For a few years now -- the original Flip Ultra, a standard Flip Mino, and now this one, the Flip Mino HD. I've always got one in my pocket. Ready to capture life at a moment's notice.     Why the Flip?    The Flip concept is brilliant: it does for video what compact digital point and shoot cameras did for photography. It makes it accessible, …

The Mino HD 2nd Generation Flip Video camcorder arrived today, small and sleek with its brushed silver metal case.    I realize a thorough review cannot be achieved in a few hours time, so expect additions and edits over the next two weeks as I run it through its paces.    Firstly, I must confess to never having owned or used a camcorder before, so everything about the Mino HD is new to me.    Apparently, this device has received some unfavorable …

Flip created the "instant camcorder" concept. Despite being acquired by Cisco, Flip has continued to innovate. From the viewpoint of someone who appreciates technology and good engineering, the Flip MinoHD is impressive. In a very small package, you can get not quite two hours of good 720p HD video with pretty good audio.     The key thing is to remember that the Flip MinoHD is not a replacement for a full sized camcorder. It has many limitations that its much bigger brothers …

The Good:    *Small in size, but powerful in HD-quality videos.  *Easy to transfer videos to computer  *East to charge  *Stylish  *Simple Operation      The Bad:    *Battery duration could've been better  *Not many options beside simple zoom      The Bottom Line:    Now you can have the power to record HD-videos from the recorder …

I own both a 2nd generation Flip MinoHD and a 3rd generation Creative Labs Vado HD so this is my review and comparison of the two side by side.     *Size / Weight Comparison*  The Flip and the Vado are almost identical in size. The only difference is that the flip is about a quarter inch longer and the Vado is about a quarter inch wider. Both camcorders seem to weigh just about the same. The Screen size of both camcorders exactly 2 inches, which is measured diagonally. …

We now live in a world where many of our electronics can do multiple functions for us. For instance, our cellphones may also function as an mp3 player, portable game system, or camera. Our phones have indeed become a sort of modern "Swiss Army Knife" for us. That's why in today's market, when a product only does one function... I think we expect it to do that function pretty well. In the case of this 2nd Generation Flip Mino HD... it leaves much to be desired. Although I love the design of it's …

I am so in love with my Flip MinoHD camcorder. This lil puppy is a purse size, pocket size HD Camcorder. Part of what is so marvelous about it is that I can literally carry it with me ALWAYS in my purse, and use it as camcorder wherever I go. Indeed, you can take photographs with it, and I have because simply I had it with me. However, it's best used as a camcorder on the go. The visual quality is HD terrific. I highly recommend it and will additionally be purchasing a non-HD version as well to …
