Great quality, super simple setup

The Mino HD 2nd Generation Flip Video camcorder arrived today, small and sleek with its brushed silver metal case.

I realize a thorough review cannot be achieved in a few hours time, so expect additions and edits over the next two weeks as I run it through its paces.

Firstly, I must confess to never having owned or used a camcorder before, so everything about the Mino HD is new to me.

Apparently, this device has received some unfavorable publicity based on a USB problem that has been fixed in the 2nd generation version I was sent, so be aware that issues in the newer models have been corrected.

What's in the box? The camcorder, a wrist strap (attaches at the lower right, below the power plug), a soft drawstring pouch for safe carrying, a safety instruction sheet, a limited warranty and a quick instruction guide. (Note: the lithium ion battery is not user replaceable and all other servicing is to be performed by qualified service personnel, also, if the unit is stored in extreme cold, it should be allowed to warm to room temperature before attempting to operate.)

Getting started was a snap. An easy menu guides you through the initial date/time and language setup. A numbered illustration details every button and port and lighted arrows and symbols make running through each operation super simple. A large red button on the arrow/symbol side both starts and stops the recording while a small switch on one side opens the flip USB plug. Just plug into any USB port on your computer and the pre-loaded software setup begins. (The lithium ion battery also charges whenever the unit is plugged into the computer.) The Flipshare software provides an easy format for organizing, browsing, playing and editing videos, making custom movies with music from videos (speakers are built in on both sides of the unit), saving videos to your computer, sharing videos online or uploading to Facebook, YouTube or MySpace. You can also view on HD television. An Hdmi mini port on the bottom allows hookup to your HDTV (cable not included). Also on the bottom is a standard thread for attaching a tripod.

The Flip Mino HD records in 720p 16.9 ratio aspect so is capable of high quality recordings and even though its small size and subsequent proclivity to be jarred by quick movements, it performs well above average expectations, plus its size gives it an advantage over bulkier camcorders.

Battery life is two hours. The device is mounted the same as a storage device so transfer of files is very easily accomplished by navigating to the video folder and dragging it to the computer to copy the files.

One item needs to be corrected: this is not a Canon product as stated on Amazon's website but a Cisco Systems product.

Definitely two thumbs up on this lightweight but durable little camcorder.

Other reviewers have commented on this model being a "throw away", that is, battery cannot be replaced, either by user or by Flip Video Support. Here's the note I received from Support today addressing my question on battery replacement:

"If the Mino's battery develops any issues while it is still under warranty, the only cost to the user will be shipping to our repair facility for replacement. There may be an added fee for this service once the warranty has expired; however, this has yet to be determined." So it sounds as though they DO replace the old batteries and the question is whether they charge for doing it, not whether they do it.

Update: I made an eight-minute video of my flower garden. While I feel I have a bit to learn in not moving quickly, I was impressed with the camera's ability to adjust to light and focus changes. It was a strolling tour where I described various plants and the sound quality was certainly acceptable.

I sent it to myself before sending it out so I could test the ease of emailing and viewing, also the quality of the output. It was pretty good for a first time experience. Surpassed all expectations.

I recently moved my Mother from out of state to be near me. Family members where she previously lived wanted to stay in contact. I selected and chose to review the Flip MinoHD model M2120 to record and send video messages from her to those family members.    The Flip MinoDH is a completely self contained compact video camera. The install file for the supporting FlipShare software is stored on the camcorder, and can be installed to a host PC as needed. The Camcorder has recording …

Flip MinoHD Camcorder (2nd Generation, 2 Hours, Brushed Metal) delivers solid video and audio quality (better than most cell-phone camcorders). It is also very easy to use. Open the box and start shooting and uploading videos in no time. It comes with built-in memory for 120 minutes of video recording, which is plenty for day-to-day video recording. Flip MinoHD main appeal is its simplicity and portability (practical to carry or put in pocket, or when you need to pack light). While using Flip MinoHD …

I've got several camcorders, some old, some new, one that's quite nice. The only one I have on me all the time is my Flip. For a few years now -- the original Flip Ultra, a standard Flip Mino, and now this one, the Flip Mino HD. I've always got one in my pocket. Ready to capture life at a moment's notice.     Why the Flip?    The Flip concept is brilliant: it does for video what compact digital point and shoot cameras did for photography. It makes it accessible, …

Flip created the "instant camcorder" concept. Despite being acquired by Cisco, Flip has continued to innovate. From the viewpoint of someone who appreciates technology and good engineering, the Flip MinoHD is impressive. In a very small package, you can get not quite two hours of good 720p HD video with pretty good audio.     The key thing is to remember that the Flip MinoHD is not a replacement for a full sized camcorder. It has many limitations that its much bigger brothers …

The Good:    *Small in size, but powerful in HD-quality videos.  *Easy to transfer videos to computer  *East to charge  *Stylish  *Simple Operation      The Bad:    *Battery duration could've been better  *Not many options beside simple zoom      The Bottom Line:    Now you can have the power to record HD-videos from the recorder …

First, I am very impressed by the quality of the video and audio from the Mino HD. I have used it in a variety of situations, and the picture and sound were always clear. The performance in lower light is also good. I like how you can set whether or not "recording" LED, a red glow from behind the microphone grilles, illuminates and whether or not there is a sound when recording starts.    The FlipShare software I am somewhat less enamored of. It's easy to use, and you can assemble …

I own both a 2nd generation Flip MinoHD and a 3rd generation Creative Labs Vado HD so this is my review and comparison of the two side by side.     *Size / Weight Comparison*  The Flip and the Vado are almost identical in size. The only difference is that the flip is about a quarter inch longer and the Vado is about a quarter inch wider. Both camcorders seem to weigh just about the same. The Screen size of both camcorders exactly 2 inches, which is measured diagonally. …

We now live in a world where many of our electronics can do multiple functions for us. For instance, our cellphones may also function as an mp3 player, portable game system, or camera. Our phones have indeed become a sort of modern "Swiss Army Knife" for us. That's why in today's market, when a product only does one function... I think we expect it to do that function pretty well. In the case of this 2nd Generation Flip Mino HD... it leaves much to be desired. Although I love the design of it's …

I am so in love with my Flip MinoHD camcorder. This lil puppy is a purse size, pocket size HD Camcorder. Part of what is so marvelous about it is that I can literally carry it with me ALWAYS in my purse, and use it as camcorder wherever I go. Indeed, you can take photographs with it, and I have because simply I had it with me. However, it's best used as a camcorder on the go. The visual quality is HD terrific. I highly recommend it and will additionally be purchasing a non-HD version as well to …
