Charming Inn Indeed!

When I visited Charleston not long ago I stayed just the most fabulous Inn ever! Usually one for the more upscale, luxury hotels, I was a little nervous about this pick – but it came highly recommended by a local who I was visiting so I set aside my worries.  I was so glad I took their advice.

Part of the Charming Inns Group, The Fulton Lane Inn is tucked away down a little alley right on King Street.  This means it is in the heart of downtown Charleston and you can walk to everything.  The staff is warm and friendly, since I was traveling alone their kindness was especially appreciated. They provided lots of advice about where to eat, what tours I might enjoy and where the best shopping might be. This northern girl was learning first hand what they say is true about Southern hospitality!

The rooms are gorgeous, like stepping back in time. Four poster beds, wicker furniture, everything you would expect from a turn of the century Inn.  The only thing I would add is that the building is older, so there is some “creaking” late at night when it’s quiet.  Being alone on this particular trip, my imagination got the best of me and I managed to freak myself out.  But I can’t blame that on the hotel! LOL!

Sherry is available to guests in the afternoon, even if you don’t think you like sherry give it a try.  You might just like it!  As one of the hotel staff explained to me, it’s a Charleston thing.  The King’s Courtyard Inn is right next door, and guests are invited to attend their complimentary wine and cheese reception in the early evening.  It’s a surprisingly generous selection of wines, cheeses and crackers.  One evening I filled up while sitting in the air conditioned salon, working on my blackberry.  It was a lovely way to pass an hour or so.

This might seem kind of silly, but I loved that I had an actual key to my room.  A big, heavy, golden key.  I know, silly.  But it added to the charm.  And this place was oozing with charm.  Can you tell I adored it?

Should you happen research the reviews on Trip Advisor, be sure to notice that all of the poor and terrible ratings are dated several years previous, while the excellent reviews are very current, just within the past few months to a year.  My trip to the Fulton Lane Inn was just six months ago. So, if you ever travel to Charleston, skip the chains and the so called luxury hotels, and go for the old-world experience. You might just be as glad as I was that you did.
