Gravity is one of the best films of the year. It stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as the sole survivors of a space shuttle mission. The bond between their two characters is one aspect that makes this film special. They are literally tethered together trying to get back to safety. A heart wrenching scene in the film is where Clooney's character Matthew Kowalski, implores Bullock's character, mission specialist Ryan Stone, to sever herself from him so that she can complete the mission. This is a very emotional scene. The drama in this movie is communicated not only through Clooney and Bullock's performances. It also conveyed through the music of composer Steven Price and the direction of Alfonso Cuaron. I love seeing shots of planet earth from outer space. I love seeing shots of pieces of meteorite and other space debris flying toward Clooney and Bullock. The music of Steven Price gives this film an emotional impact. There are intense instrumental pieces like the six and half minute instrumental "The Void". This instrumental is both serene and suspenseful. "Don't Let Go" is another powerful piece of music too, The score creates the emotion of the film. Sandra Bullock should get a nomination for best actress for her work here. She displays a range of emotions in the film. She is strong and fearless putting out a fire aboard a space capsule. She faces her own mortality when the space capsules runs out of fuel. The intensity and fear on her face is evident as she slowly runs low of oxygen in other scene. Bullock is also good grieving the death of her young daughter in this film. I won't give away the final outcome of the movie. I will say that Gravity had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

It is a near real-time, high caliber popcorn film that delivers dramatic tension, jaw-dropping suspense and spectacular visuals. Despite the fact that it lacks complex themes save for the triumph of the human spirit, the film has a very simple yet brilliantly-weaved story. The film begins with a trio of spacewalking … more
