Too Much Phone And Too Much Money For HTC EVO 4G, But Work Good

A lot of people are running out and making the cell phone companies rich. What ever happen to the good old days when we just waited until we got home and made any phone call or tried to contact some one that was important. Now, they have made these phone so expensive and put so much stuff on these new phones that you could not learn to use the phone adequately. We have been using this phone for about a year and we have yet to take advantage of its full potential. I really don't know how the kids now-a-days do it. This phone cost us about $600.00 plus the signing of a two year contract with "Sprint". This time the contract was not the worst of our problems, the hardest thing that we had to do was worry about how we were going to use all of the applications that this phone has to offer. Sometimes too much is not a good thing, it only makes things more confusing.

Description and Features
If you are looking for a small phone then this one is not the one for you. But, if you do not mind a cumbersome phone hanging off of your belt then go ahead and get this one. This is 4.8" h x 2.6" w x 0.5" th, this also weighs only 6 ounces when it has the original battery still attached. This comes with 4G/3G wireless capabilities, and this also allows you to connect up with 8 Wi-Fi devices for all of your hot spots and dead spots that you would have with a less capable phone. They make this in black and white but the only places that you can get this in white is through Sprint and Best Buy. This has a large (4.3")touch screen which will you to do a pinch to touch zoom in and out and a camera located on the back (8.0 MP)and one on the face(1.3MP). The operating system is the Android 2.2 operating system, and with the Google and HTC search services, you will be able to interface with face book, any mapping, your hot mail accounts, you tube and all internet services that you would have on a regular PC. This also comes complete with a GPS navigation system with all turn by turn directions. There is also a slot for a mini SD card for saving all of your media apps. The Bluetooth enabling capability is great for hooking up to your car automatically. You can also text message with this a lot easier than those old flip phones. If you do not like holding this phone up to your ear all day then the built in speaker is a great option for this phone.

Other features that bring this phone to life is the fact that it has two LED lights on the back that act as a flashlight. This also has a front indicator light, ear piece, proximity indicator, and a nice display screen. This also has several keys that will allow you different functions, such as a menu, home, search, and back keys. You will not need and external microphone because this has an internal one. As for the camera, this has a built in dual flash and the lens is part of the built in camera, the front camera allows you to take pictures of yourself. With a simple adjustment of the volume button you can adjust the ringer volume and adjust the voice volume while you are in the middle of a phone call. On the back of this phone this has an option that a lot of other phones do not have, and that is a kick stand so that you do not have to hold this up while you are watching a movie. You can also connect this to a television set with the use of a HDMI cable, to allow you to watch all of your stored videos and pictures.

When you first charge your phone up and turn it on you will see a very brightly colored home screen which has 5 main options to choose from. These include the status bar which will tell you how many bars that you will have and the time and wireless and Bluetooth connectivity that you have. In order to be able to use the blue tooth capability in your car, your car will have to be equipped with that application. Then you will also have an application icon, which when tapped will give you access other related apps. The third is activated for all of the other programs that is held on your phone. The fourth is activated with a quick tap and you can add other short cuts and folders to your home screen. The last is the quick tap option the will allow you to make phone calls. When the little house shaped icon is tapped, you will get access to the extended home screen. This will give you an additional 6 screens for all kinds of apps. This can be customized to fit your personality.
The first thing that we noticed about this phone is that is has an automatic quiet ring feature that will tone down the ringer volume as soon as you pick it up to answer it. This also makes it real easy to save phone numbers and will automatically sort in alphabetical order. The EVO makes finding the correct number a breeze, by tapping the people highlight and entering the first letter of the person's name you will be able to recall that certain number. There is a major downfall, yes this does have speed dial, but you can only store 9 numbers. All you have to do to use this feature is press and hold 0-9 for approximately two seconds and a number should show up and start dialing.

There are a lot of nice accessories that this phone has to offer. If you are working in the construction industry, then it is very possible that you may need a better case to protect your investment. The other thing that we found out right away was the fact that the original battery only lasted us four to six hours. So, we had to invest in a new extended life battery that lasts at least 24 hours at a crack. We found one on Amazon for about $60.00, the only problem with this battery is that it not only will add to the weight it also adds to the thickness of the entire phone. This phone does an excellent job keeping phone calls from dropping.  While we are using this phone it will shut the main screen off to save on the battery. This also has a nice locking feature, it is kind of like the feature that is on an iPod. There is a illuminated bar that you would slide to unlock the phone to allow you to have access  to the features of the phone. You will need to be able to do this to access all of your missed calls and any incoming or outgoing calls.

This phone will come with a ION lithium battery which only lasts 6 hours, and the phone has an LED indicator light that is located in the upper right hand corner of the ear piece. When full charged this light will be a solid green light, a solid amber light means that the phone is in the charging mode, a flashing amber light means that your batter is low, and a flashing green light means that you have a new message that you have not listened to, or looked at. The extended life battery is twice as thick as the original battery. If your battery goes too low your phone will automatically power down, and you will lose all info that you are trying to work on. With that being said you should keep an eye on the level of charge that you battery has.

If you are a texting nut, then you will love what this phone does for you. You can either use this phone in the regular position, or when you turn it on its side, the keyboard that is on the screen will turn as your phone turns. You do not have to worry about your fingers being too big, because you can just use your thumbs to type with ease. This also allows you to insert a word in a predictive mode, where you come close to the spelling and just about every time the proper word would appear. Misspelled words, will be in the past. You will have three type of keyboard layouts to choose from and they are the "QWERTY", which means the keyboard is similar to a desktop keyboard. The second is a "Phone Keyboard", this will look like a traditional wireless phone keyboard. Third, a "COMPACT QWERTY", this type will feature two letters on each key, this will allow you to have a larger keyboard than that of a regular QWERTY board.

We have a variety of different ring tones, which we can dictate who gets what ring. With this having a timeout setting, it makes your battery last a little longer. You can also choose from live and android wallpaper with just a tap of the gallery icon. If you are a traveler this has a setting for all airplanes, we do not usually travel by air so this is wasted on us. If you are hard of hearing or totally deaf this has TTY (teletypewriter) which allows communication with people that have disabilities a lot easier to be able to use this phone. Another feature that this has is a viewable history which makes re-dialing a breeze. This will show you all of your missed or accepted or placed calls that you have done on this phone. This also allows you to add people from your Gmail, Google, face book accounts, and contacts from your pc without any problems. You can also have the ability to add pictures to all of your contacts, but you will need to install a picture into your phone to do so.

This also has a calendar that you can view by the day, week or the whole month. You can add events even on a daily basis, and if you do you can have an alert sent to you when that day and time gets closer. If you really want to go high tech then you can use the automatic voice recognition (ASR), you will have to learn exactly what to say to get this to bring up who you want or what you want the phone to do. If you are into taking pictures then you are going to like the camera that comes equipped on this phone. There is a 8.0 MP on the back and a 1.3 MP on the front. I have seen a lot of phones that takes pictures but this is the clearest one of them all. You can also use this as a camcorder, but the distance will not be as much as a free hand held camcorder. This is basically a point and shoot camera, and if you want it to work properly you have to have the microSD card installed to be able to use. Just like a desktop PC you can download music and then listen and with the headphones you will get a very good sound quality. We have not had any static or breaking up of the sound, this is as clear as it gets.  You can even watch TV if you purchase the access from sprint. This will be a monthly fee, but we have not subscribed to this either. This is another thing that is wasted on us, and just like the iPod you can purchase music from Amazon.

The GPS Navigation system is just like the one inside of your car, with the exception of it being portable. You can take this anywhere, and it works like a dream, but you also have to purchase this for an additional monthly fee. It is just like map quest with all the bells and whistles and turn by turn navigation.

This comes with a 12 month mfg warranty, but I would highly recommend that you purchase the theft and extended warranty, because if something is going to happen, it more than likely will. We have been lucky in that aspect, because no one has stolen this and we have taken good care not to drop this in water or on the floor. The construction case has saved us several times from being damaged.

We are extremely happy with phone, but there is just a bit too much on this phone that we do not use. I know that maybe in time we  may use all of these apps but it is not worth the money to have it available to just sit and waste away. This has an excellent picture and sound quality, compared to the old flip phones. The main problem with this is that after you get done paying the high price for this phone and paying for a two year plan from Sprint, there are still more apps that you have to purchase a monthly plan to be able to use. I can't see why they do not just give you everything that this phone does, for the price that you pay for it. Instead of charging you extra for the extras. Overall I can give this 7 out of ten stars because there is just way too much on this phone that we will never use and is wasted on us. There are probably a lot of kids out there will be able to take advantage of everything that this phone has to offer, but not us.
