A Quick Tip by woopak_the_thrill

I was recently asked by two good friends of mine, "Will, what do you think would make you happy?" and "are you happy?"...I answered: "Happiness is an illusion and merely a state of mind".

I mean, the definition of happiness is different from the other. One would say happiness is having a good career and a family living in a huge house, while some would say "as long as I am healthy, I am happy...". I've heard many say, riches would make them happy. Many put happiness in line with fulfillment; but really what is fulfillment? Humans have the uncanny ability to be dissatisfied with what they have almost....always, because they always want more and we just desire more. I saw some kids playing in the playground the other day and they looked sincerely happy. I wondered what do they have that adults are missing?

Really, as fallible beings, we really don't know what we want, nor do we really know what would make us happy. For me, one needs to make himself happy. Being satisfied with who you are equals happiness. Happiness means having and being satisfied with what you really need than what you think you want.

The idea that happiness is a state to be aspired to only came along recently. Truth is, happiness will come and go.

About this topic

Happiness is a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy. A variety of philosophical, religious, psychological and biological approaches have striven to define happiness and identify its sources.

Philosophers and religious thinkers often define happiness in terms of living a good life, or flourishing, rather than simply as an emotion. Happiness in this older sense was used to translate the Greek Eudaimonia, and is still used in virtue ethics.

While direct measurement of happiness presents challenges, tools such as The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire have been developed by researchers. Positive psychology researchers use theoretical models that include describing happiness as consisting of positive emotions and positive activities, or that describe three kinds of happiness: pleasure, engagement, and meaning.

Research has identified a number of attributes that correlate with happiness: relationships and social interaction, extraversion, marital status, employment, health, democratic freedom, optimism, religious involvement, income and proximity to other happy people.

Happiness economics suggests that measures of public happiness should be used to supplement more traditional economic measures when evaluating the success of public policy.
