Unlike me, my brother knows about cars...

I don't know anything about cars, which is shameful considering my Dad and brother have built them from scratch, but I know what I think I need from one: good gas mileage, reliability and the ability to move lots of stuff around. This is almost like the sign you see in some stores: "Cheap, fast and good: pick any two", especially since it's really hard to find vehicles that combine these qualities.
I went through a strange phase last year when I really wanted a Smart car. To me, it seemed like I would be totally under the radar, like driving a satsuma. But then I realized that I couldn't really carry anything and the Deathtrap rating seemed a little high for California roads. Anyway, even before this I flirted with a Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris but nothing really has great gas mileage for the size compromise (and a Prius is definitely out).

Every five years I go through this routine and spend six months pontificating until I eventually call my brother and he tells me what to buy. "You need a CR-V," he says confidently after 10 minutes of my ranting and whining about the car industry. And I have to say he's right - it's a great car. It doesn't do all that annoying crap that GM does with endless alarms and alerts. It has practically no blindspots, accelerates well, has more airbags than you can wave a stick at, and is roomy enough to carry anything I need to move around.

I have an absolute phobia of going into car dealerships and getting sleazed into buying a car I don't want and then getting screwed six ways from Sunday on pricing, warranties and everything else. So if this vehicle can just last another 30 years, I should be fine. And I just discovered JiffyLube (I'm really don't know anything about cars), so instead of shelling out $150 for a service, it's now just $40. I am one happy little camper. :-)

I have driven/owned 3 Hondas and I'll have to say they rock, not to mention they will last you a while with good upkeep and minimal repair!

once the Beemer required more work that it was worth - we decided to go ahead and get a new car.  we wanted to lease somethign b/c we figure (HOPE) in 3 years that there will be lots more choices for hybrids.  meanwhile - we love this car.  it frives great - the GPS totally rocks (it's one of those things you never knew you needed until you have it and now you can't live w/o it - like a cellphone or ATM card).  we just moved to a new city and it's hands down the best way …

Honda cars are excellent. I have several family members who own their cars and the mere fact they've lasted through so much abuse earns Honda an excellent rating. My cousin, for example, has had a Civic model since 1996. Twelve years later, the car has absolutely no engine problems. The only issues are with the interior and some parts becoming loose, and with the exterior (scratches, dents, etc), all to be expected after more than a decade of driving.  My sister, on the other hand, has …
