Before reviewing, I want to get it out in the open that I am a hardcore Colbert Report fan... so I may be a little biased. ;)
I Am America (And So Can You!) is a hilarious book. You cannot go into this book hoping to take it seriously; you have to start reading it with the intent of laughing. Stephen Colbert covers his views on politics, family, sports, etc.; basically all "his" views on life. If you have ever seen his show; the book is basically the show in book form. Throughout the book there are things written in the side margins that are sometimes moderately funny, sometimes hilarious, and sometimes not worth reading. There are also pages of stickers throughout the book, including a page of stickers that to stick on other books to give them Stephen Colbert's "stamp of approval" (they look like the awards that are often embossed onto award-winning books). There is another page of stickers of annotations that you can stick into the book on parts that you like with funny phrases that sound like they are coming straight from the mouth of Stephen. Highly recommended book for anyone with a good sense of humor, and especially Colbert Report fans.
P.S. I have found that book is even more entertaining if you imagine it is Stephen's script on his show and he is reading it. His inflections and voice make it extra funny.
I love Stephen Colbert. I've watched almost every episode of The Colbert Report since it premiered a few years ago. For anyone who enjoys his show, his book, I Am America (And So Can You!), is a must-read. It's more of Colbert’s satirical sense of humor, so intentionally over-the-top ridiculous that it's hard not to laugh at it. He covers varying topics, including religion, family, sports, etc. There are also hilarious footnotes and notes in the margins, packing even more jokes … more
It's a pretty good read, but to be honest, if you love Colbert's comedic style the audio book is just better. The timing and tone is what makes the humor so on spot, and it just doesn't translate well in this book.
