This book chronicles every week of Jonathan Goldstein's 39th year of life. He is a Canadian radio host with a show called Wiretap. A lot of these subjects come from his radio show and his newspaper columns. I can identify with a lot of the things that Jonathan Goldstein discusses in this book. Both of us spend a lot of time thinking about what to eat for our next meal. He thinks about the loss of his hair like I do. He admits to thinking about his sexual fantasies. The humor of Jonathan Goldstein's material comes from his honest opinions about these subjects.
He writes about foods that I have never heard of. He talks about his love of melba toast. Melba toast is simply toast topped with cheese or pate. Melba toast is usually served with soup. He makes a reference to a food called poutine. Poutine is French fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. This food sounds like it would give me a heart attack, but it is something that I would like to try in moderation. He also makes a reference to a food called souvlaki. This is a shish kabob made with lamb. I want to thank Jonathan Goldstein for raising my curiosity and for making me hungry.
There is a sentimentality in Goldstein's personality that I like. He puts copies of poems in his wallet. I love to read poetry. Putting poems in my wallet is something that I do whenever I find words of encouragement. Goldstein writes about taking a trip to Puerto Rico in an attempt to find out if holds any romantic allure for him. This is a place where his parents spent their honeymoon. I think that his trip to Puerto Rico is a beautiful way to honor his parents. I love Goldstein's relationship with his toy poodle named Boosh. This is a pet that he treats like an extra sibling and a room mate. I had a dog for seventeen years, so I can relate to the close relationship between a grown man and his dog. I enjoy the humor and sentimentality of Jonathan Goldstein very much.
