Ikea Lattsam tub

A baby tub manufactured and distributed by Ikea

A basic baby bathing must have.

I love IKEA for the simplicity in the design of their products. The Lattsam Baby Tub is no exception. So simple, yet you will not find it at a regular baby store. Yes, you'll find a lot of different tubs with contoured seats, attached hand held showers, mesh slings, and fancy frills. What about a basic tub where you can even fit a three year old? None, nada. Don't get me wrong, those contoured ones are really helpful until a baby can sit on his/her own, then they just become a nuisance because the baby doesn't have room to bathe or play. You can put a baby straight in a big tub, but that is not the safest option, even with a non-slip pad (that will accumulate mold and mildew). You've probably also seen the inflatable tubs - no good either, not with all the phtalates and carcinogens.

The IKEA Lattsam tub is so simple and perfect in every way. It is the ultimate way to bathe a baby who just started sitting on his own. Trust me, you really don't need a shower attachment. It is just big enough to last until your baby is ready for the big tub. In the photo you can get a good idea of how big it is with my 8 month old daughter in it. It has nice edges that the baby can hold on to. The best feature are the no-slip rubber grips on the inside and outside of the tub. This means the baby doesn't slip and neither does the tub when the baby, like mine, decides to sway back and forth catching waves. It is made of polypropylene, a stable plastic that will not leach stuff into the water.

As for value... You can't possibly beat $7.99 for a baby tub, unless you buy a used one on Craigslist. You'll also save money on water (if you pay for your own) considering you don't have to fill the big tub. Your baby will feel more secure in something that is just the right size. If you are like me though and you go to IKEA with a list, Lattsam as item number one, you most likely will not stop at that. I always get something that is not on my list, no matter how hard I try!

I had one 9 years ago, they are fabulous! I had my son was in it til he was around 2.5 to 3 years old. We are expecting our newest addition, and I am buying another. By the way the one my son used, moved on to 2 other children (friends kids) after he was done with it, without a problem! As far a converting it for a newborn? Go by target or any other cheap place and grab a bath sling (kind of a metal frame lined with mesh material) and throw it in there. It works great! And as he grew and started to sit on his own, it gave him a little extra support and a soft place to fall back on.

oh and did I mention your picture is the only one online that actually shows a baby in the tub so you can get a sense of size?? I had no idea whatsoever from Ikea's site alone if this was a mini tub or something big enough for my chunkymonkey ds to fit into :)

Ikea is fun to shop in. One can find all kind of things one needs and some (which you don't need, hehe...).
