200 Words or Less: JACK REACHER Wasn't A Stretch
Tom Cruise's JACK REACHER kinda/sorta came & went from theatres pretty, and that's a shame. This is the kind of action centerpiece that studios used to put good money behind, and, when handled & marketed correctly, audiences flocked to. IMDB says that this was budgeted at $60M, but it didn't look like it to me. Not sure how much of that went to Cruise, but it certainly didn't have a lot of other star wattage power behind it, though Rosalind Pike and Robert Duvall turn in nice performances. I realize Cruise's luster may've lost some of its shine, but this one deserved more than its domestic $80M take.
HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE. Don't know if it'll happen or not, but JACK REACHER should be the start of a long, powerful franchise for Tom Cruise. He serves up a powerhouse main performance in a story that, at times, feels a bit contrived, but it's easy to forgive, especially since it's so darn rewarding. Just who is Reacher? He's a loner. A drifter. A face in the crowd. But he's always – always – on the side of justice. Always.
