At the age of only 20 years old, Joel Crouse is set to release his debut single this month. Signed to Toby Keith's Show Dog-Universal at 19, Crouse has been working on his debut album since. He isn't going in alone. Some of Nashville's heavy-weights are helping including BMI's Songwriter of the Year, Luke Laird ("Pontoon," "A Little Bit Stronger," "Drink In My Hand") are working on the release. Joel teamed up with Luke and Jamie Houston for his debut single "If You Want Some."
The song is a fun, summer-song that I could see doing decently well with a younger crowd. Upon first listen, I wasn't a huge fan of the song. With influences like Hank, Waylon, and Merle I would have suspected a more country sound from the young hopeful. The lyrics lack substance and the melody is just mediocre. I didn't finish this review for a few days because I was so unsure about the song. Although I'm not particularly a fan, I found myself singing along in my head all day long. We've seen troubles with Show Dog promoting their artists effectively in the past, and I feel this is yet another gifted talent that will end up in the way-side. Let's just say there better be a killer follow up single because the combination of his looks and this song aren't gonna be the recipe for success this time 'round.
The young hopeful has some cool cover songs on his youtube page (JoelCrouseMusic). If you want to stay in contact head over to Facebook.com/JoelCrouseMusic or follow him on twitter (@JoelCrouse).
