I will visit London some day. But until I get that chance, this book is the next best thing. The author of this book is the current mayor of London. His name is Boris Johnson. He has been the mayor since 2008. I am amazed by the brave achievements and inventions of the people in this book. I thank Boris Johnson for bringing the achievements of these fascinating people to life. Here are some of the individual profiles I enjoyed in this book.

John Wilkes was a member of the British Parliament. He later became the Mayor of London. He was also a journalist who fought for freedom of speech and voting rights. I never thought people in the eighteenth century dealt with issues like this. I found this chapter to be fascinating. Florence Nightengale is a name that I have heard of before. I never knew what she accomplished until I read this book. She was a nurse who aided British soldiers in the Crimean War. Mary Seacole was a black nurse who worked with Nightengale during the conflict. She endured racism, but she served Britain proudly. This book expands my knowledge of geography and history. I learned where the Crimean Peninsula is. It is located in the Ukraine.

I learned that Hadrian's Wall was built to keep the Scots out of England. It is one of the tourist attractions I would like to see if I ever visit England. I have never of the art work of 18th century painter Joseph William Turner. He painted stunning paintings of ships at sea. He also painted palaces and churches. He also had the temerity to paint portraits of people having sex.

Boris Johnson also profiles Keith Richards in this book. He is the song writer and lead guitarist for the Rolling Stones. He creatively crafted the melody for the song "You Can't Always Get What You Want". This is my favorite Rolling Stones song. He also wrote the melody for" I Can't Get No Satisfaction" and "Start Me Up". These are two rock classics that I love. I learned that London has four hundred venues to enjoy live music. I love to enjoy live music, so this information gives me more motivation to visit London.

Boris Johnson includes inventions that originated in London. I learned that ping ping was originally played with a champagne cork in the the mid 19th century. I love to read tabloid journalism. I learned that it originated in the work of W.T. Stead. He wrote about the subject of the rape of young girls in the 1880's and he pioneered tabloid journalism in doing so. This is a very informative book about a vibrant city. I enjoyed this book very much.
