Jonathan Adler, Garish or Great?

Some find him a bit "over the top". Others think his products are outrageously expensive. Whatever you think, you can't deny this designer is a business powerhouse. His home accessories, which include things like throw pillows, furniture, and most notably pottery are everywhere, and are pretty darn cute. While I don't know if I could live in a room he's designed for life or anything, his designs are bright and fun, and there are definitely ideas you can take from him. And though his stuff is a little too expensive for my tastes, all of his products are quite enjoyable to look at, and sometimes even affordable during sales! I also think anyone who's amassed such a design empire deserves a little respect. In closing, this is basically the sort of empire I would want!

He definitely has a sense of humor that comes through in his designs. They're refined... but also kind of funny. Reminds me of the way Isaac Mizrahi approaches clothing. Fortunately, there's no price on sense of humor. I don't see myself affording Adler's stuff anytime soon either ... unless it's a severely discounted tiny candy dish.

Hah! I never really thought about it before but he totally does kind of decorate for a bunch of circus/carnivale people who have like, won the lottery and are trying to appear as if they have good tastes. I mean, I still dig most of his work, but that's probably because I've secretly always wanted to work for a circus. Sigh.

About this topic

Jonathan Adler's design career began with pottery, first learning the craft at a young age and then continuing with it in college. After trying out the movie business in New York City for a few years after graduating, his pottery career really took off in 1994 when some of his designs were bought by Barney's. So popular was his work, that by 1998 he opened his first store, in Soho. He spent the next few years honing both his designs and his style, eventually opening a second store on the West Coast in 2001. The next year he branched out into furniture lines and began taking on interior design jobs, which he immediately became fabulous at.  The next few years saw the Adler brand expand into other categories, like bedding and stationary and he opened up stores in various other U.S. cities. Today, the Jonathan Adler brand is synonymous with fun, eclectic style and he is considered an expert in the field of creating gorgeous interiors.
Your first step in gaining inspiration from Jonathan Adler's designs is to study his portfolio. The second step is to remember his "ten commandments of a happy chic home". Among the commandments, Adler encourages homeowners to embrace "maximalism", allow hotel comforts, mix chic with traditional, and a bevy of hilariously written others. Perhaps most importantly, Adler emphasizes that you shouldn't covet your neighbor's home, but rather create a home that others will covet.
