This is something that I normally wouldnt post about but I'm really irked by this story from CNN.
I was shocked to hear that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno would be caned for having a beer in hotel bar in Malaysia. Malaysia forbids drinking alcohol if you are a Muslim. The basis of her punishment is that since she is Muslim that she broke a religious law(In Malaysia there is a civil & religious court). I have major respect for Kartika. She not only stepped up and acted responsibly regarding her actions by accecpting & paying the fine but she wants her punishment to be executed publicly. My issue with this is that no court religious, civil, or otherwise should ever have the ability to punish someone for not following their religion's rules. There are some execptions that are understandable where someone is being harmed by your actions(murder, assault, etc.). Imagine being jailed for a week for eyeballing your neighbors spouse, or spending a year in jail for eating something that is against your beliefs. When I read this my first thoughts were this is really religious based discrimination, based on the simple fact that the country is religion to control and incriminate its people. Imagine being pulled over by a police officer & being thrown in jail for listening to heavy metal, rap, or anykind of music someone would consider secular.
