In Praise of Small Dogs

In opposition to Trashcanman, I am very much in love with small dogs.  I came to this revelation in the last few years.  Until then, I had always thought of myself as a large breed dog owner.  One day, a lady  came into my booth at an art's festival carrying a well behaved long haired chihuahua.  Enchanted, I struck up a conversation and got the phone number of her breeder.  My husband was not thrilled with my recent obsession, but indulged me despite his reservations.  Upon entering the kennel, the lady gestured towards a handsome smoke grey male and said, "There he is!"  In my genteel manner, I replied, "Yeah, yeah.  BUT. WHAT. IS. THAT?"

It was a one and a half pound, black and white Papillon.  I was immediately smitten and handed over his ransom on the spot.  He has become the joy of my life and my constant companion.  Zali  travels as easily by car or plane as he does pass the night in a hotel in busy Manhattan.  He is comical, intelligent and a master study of my moods.  In short, he is a portable Border Collie--brains and beauty with an ebullient sense of fun.  My husband soon fell to his charms.  Two years ago, I adopted another Papillon for my husband for his birthday.  He named her Simone.  She is completely different and equally lovable.

So if you prefer the advice of someone who actually is familiar with small dog companionship, I highly recommend small breed dogs.  I mean, really, unless you and Paris spend your Sundays, wearing matching pink sparly tees and doing eachother's make-up, then you do not ACTUALLY KNOW HER AND THEREFORE CANNOT PASS JUDGEMENT ON ALL SMALL DOG OWNERS.  Rachel Ray can be rather annoying in my opinion and she owns a Pit Bull.  And from what I have read, has very little in common with Michael Vick.   As with larger breeds, be careful to choose one with the right temperment for your family.  Some breeds can be rambuctious and destructive without proper supervision just like thier larger cousins.  Papillons are calm, playful, athletic, and not destructive when left alone.  They can go for a run or a nap or fetch a ball.  The choice is yours.  I am very pleased with the breed and highly recommend it.

As my husband has said many times, "I didn't know I liked small dogs, but we have finally found our breed."

Aw, I love tiny dogs.  Actually, I love all dogs!  I would never judge someone by the size of their pooch.  The only time I have a problem with people who have purse/lap dogs is when they treat them more like an accessory than an actual pet/companion.  Thanks for sharing your personal experience with us and giving us your two cents on this, Angela.  The followers of the Pet Community will sure be interested in reading this!

Well, they are a little more portable than a giant frog, although not nearly as exotic. ;D

Like a cat, in that they can fit in your lap, but unlike a cat, in that they actually want to be there...I am definitely a cat person.

About this topic

A lapdog is a dog that is small enough to be held in the arms or lie comfortably on a person's lap. Lapdogs are not a specific breed, but is a generic term for a type of dog of small size and friendly disposition.

Lapdogs historically were kept in many societies around the world by individuals with leisure time, as docile companion animals with no working function. Genetic analysis reveals that lapdogs are among the earliest specific types of dogs to live with people. Today, most lapdog breeds fall into the Toy breed group.
