Never been there, never done that and probably never will.

Las Vegas, Nevada is probably the last place on earth I would want to take a vacation.  It is also one of the last places in America I would want to live  (Houston being the other).  While I have never been there I have seen and read enough over the years to know that I detest just about everything about it.   The lights, the noise, the gambling, the pollution, the congestion, most of the shows, and the sprawl simply don't interest me in the least.  I know that everyone is different and many people look forward to their annual Vegas vacation.  And I realize that there are many great attractions within driving distance of the city.  But I believe I'll  pass anyway.   There are so many other places in our country that I would rather see.

I totally disagree. I hope I can :-) I've been to Vegas many times in the last 15 years. It's a fun place, lots to see, lots to do. It's a city in the U.S. which is still safe to walk at night alone & that is quite something imho. Also, you totally miss out the very best of Vegas when you give this city a miss. What's best is not the casino, the night entertainment (although for this one, i still have yet find something comparable out there in the world) or the shopping (which i think is pretty good). What's BEST is the many national parks around this city. So good so that if you have not visited the GRAND CANYON, BRYCE CANYON, ZION CANYON, RED ROCK CANYON, VALLEY OF FIRE, DEATH VALLEY, MONUMENT VALLEY, LAKE POWELL, GLEN CANYON, etc... You have missed out the best of the entire U.S.A. Trust me on this, I've been to every single one of those places & I've visited 1/2 of America. You've got to see it to believe it. If you enjoy a cabin on a lake in some faraway place, these national parks are treasures, treasures I'll never want to miss it in my life! Granted, you can fly somewhere else and drive all the way to them, but Vegas as a gateway is still much better than any other neighboring cities. It's less stressful flying to Vegas than L.A.! So, don't give it a miss until you've seen it and it's not fair to put down a place when you've not even been there!!! Try it, it might just surprised you!!!

My husband and I used to drive to Las Vegas when we lived in Los Angeles. It was a short, snappy getaway and nice at that time. Believe it or not, Vegas was once a very classy place. That's no longer the case. Everything has gotten too big and way too expensive. Also, people dress extremely casual most of the time, bordering on pure sloppiness. We haven't been there in quite awhile.

I just checked recently on the sites of the resorts... prices have come down a lot! Prices as with real estate in the U.S. was skewed the last 2 years. As a traveler, I'm glad to say things have finally come back to normal! :-) If you like classy, try Palazzo & Wynn.

I can agree with you on not wanting to LIVE there, but for a short get-away from your everyday life, if you enjoy live music, cards, dancing, and socializing, Las Vegas can be thought of as just a big playground for adults. I too would prefer a cabin in the woods, but I cannot help but be drawn to the spectacle that is Las Vegas. I am going there for my first time in a few weeks, so I guess I will find out first hand what I really think of the place.

The Sin City: I want to live here!
Las Vegas as a city is easy to manouver. Get through the airport & in no time, you are in your hotel room! & I do mean in no time. The airport is right in the city! How many cities in U.S. has such easy access to the airport? Not many! And I don't mean places like Whites City. So, now that you are in your hotel, amazing, isn't it? I love the mega & absolutely opulent hotels here, especially those on the strip. You can do anything in your hotel room, but not out on the …

Steak, machine guns and empty wallets - perfect.
I take any excuse to go to Vegas: conferences, weddings, bachelor parties, "just passing through" - you name it. The first time I ever went, it remember thinking it was like somebody knew everything I liked and squeezed it into one city. Heaven would be Las Vegas with easier transport. While I'm not known for getting over excited, walking through a casino floor sometimes gives me that "OMG OMG!" feeling like a texting 15-year old. See, I'm even getting excited …

Las Vegas is fun & glitzy. It is a city of happenings and one of the greatest place to be during Christmas & New Year's Eve! I simply love all the nightlife and the national parks around this area. It has almost everything!

Huge city with plenty to do, but the glitz would wear thin and your best to just visit and not live there to keep it fresh.

It's one of the most vibrant cities in the U.S. & despite all its commercialism, I love it for a variety of reasons. Awesome entertainment!

I guess I would qualify as a frustrated writer. My work requires very little writing and so since 1999 I have been writing reviews on non-fiction books and anthology CD's on amazon.com. I never could … more

About this topic

Las Vegas (Spanish: The Meadows) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada, the seat of Clark County, and an internationally renowned resort city for gambling, shopping, and entertainment. Las Vegas, billed as The Entertainment Capital of the World, is famous for the number of casino resorts and associated entertainment. A growing retirement and family city, it is the 28th most populous city in the United States with an estimated population by the U.S. Census Bureau of 558,880 as of 2007. The estimated population of the Las Vegas metropolitan area, which is the entirety of Clark County, was 1,836,333.

Established in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. With the growth that followed, at the close of the century Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded in the 20th century (a distinction held by Chicago in the 19th century). The city's tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and this image has made Las Vegas a popular setting for films and television programs. Outdoor lighting displays are everywhere on the Las Vegas Strip and are seen elsewhere in the city as well; as seen from space, Las Vegas is the brightest city on earth.

The name Las Vegas is often applied to unincorporated suburbs that surround the city, especially the resort areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip. This 4.5-mile (7.2-km) stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard is mostly outside the city limits, in the unincorporated ...
