Used to hate him, now I love him

I first became aware of Mark Cuban when he burst onto the sports scene after purchasing the Dallas Mavericks.  All I knew of him was he made a billion dollars selling his dot com company to Yahoo during the height of the Internet craze, smartly cashed out and used a lot of money to buy the Mavericks, then dropped a lot more money to turn the perennial doormat into a very good franchise.  He then spent games acting like an annoying kid who was hopped up on sugar - berating officials, being overly animated in his cheering of his team, as well as his complaining of calls.  To be frank, he annoyed the hell out of me.

But as time went on and I learned more about his past and savviness, I began to become less annoyed with the guy.

When I read somewhere that during his college days at Indiana University he bought a bar and made hundreds of fellow students limited partners, i loved his style.  Not only did he raise capital, but he ensured a steady stream of patrons by having a network of hundreds of fellow student-owners.

When I read that after selling one of his earlier comapnies, he decided to buy a lifetime first class air pass on American Airlines for $250,000 (less than ten years later, American sold the same pass for $3 million), I loved the move.  That's exactly something I would do.

The more I learned about the guy, the more I realized he was extremely smart, extremely savvy, extremely odd, and a little crazy.

Now I love the guy.  Whenever I happen upon his blog, www.blogmaverick.com, I'm thoroughly entertained and normally find some insightful thoughts.  Here's the post that inspired me to give Mr. Cuban his props and write this review:  blogmaverick.com/2009/08/19/success-motivati...preneurs-should-not-do/  I love that he shared this letter.  I give it a 97 out of 100 on the unintentional comedy scale.

About this topic

Wiki

Mark Cuban (born July 31, 1958) is an American billionaire entrepreneur. He is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, an NBA basketball team, and Chairman of HDNet, an HDTV cable network.

Mark Cuban (his family's last name was shortened from Chabenisky when his grandparents immigrated to America) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, in a Jewish working class family. His father Norton was an automobile upholsterer. Cuban's first step into the business world occurred at age 12, when he sold garbage bags in order to pay for a pair of expensive basketball shoes. While in school, he held a variety of jobs, including bartender, disco dancing instructor, and party promoter. He paid for college by collecting and selling stamps, and once gained about $1,100 from starting a chain letter.

Rather than attend high school for his senior year, Cuban enrolled as a full time student at the University of Pittsburgh. After one year at the University of Pittsburgh, he transferred to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.
