Mayweather Now Has A 46-0 Record But This Fight Was Not A Unanimous Decision In His Favor

Mayweather fought a tough fight-maybe his toughest to date. The fans got what they came for when Maidana pressed the contest by giving Mayweather a proverbial run for his money. Mayweather threw about half the punches of Maidana yet his punches were delivered more effectively. The champ is coming close to breaking the 49-0 fight barrier but the cost is high for him.

This reviewer had Maidana winning the first four rounds which is unusual. It's doubtful this has ever happened before with Mayweather as an opponent. Maidana was the aggressor through a large part of the fight. For the first 4 rounds Maidana crowded Mayweather on the ropes and stalked him throughout much of the fight. Mayweather's defense paid off mightily in this fight. It was the reason he won.

Mayweather won the fifth through the ninth rounds with stiff jabs, right crosses and even fighting southpaw at a few junctures in the fight like the ninth round. Round 10 was about even; however, Maidana continued to dig the body with strong penetrating punches. Many gave Maidana the eleventh round with strong flurries of punches which pinned Mayweather to the ropes.

Mayweather won Round 12 narrowly with strong looping hooks while Maidana cracked the body with a crushing blow. In the end, Mayweather retained his world title and increased his consecutive wins from a spectacular 45 to 46-0. This brings Mayweather one step closer to breaking the all-time record of 49-0.

The hallmark of this fight was that Maidana crowded Mayweather on the ropes and delivered a huge beating. The news media had the fight closer than the judges by only 1-2 points. This reviewer had the fight 114:113 in favor of Mayweather but he won by the narrowest of margins. Fans are talking about a rematch this Fall and Mayweather is under great pressure to sign for a rematch. The booing was understandable because this fight was so close. Clearly, this was the hardest 32 million ever earned by Mayweather. Can he go all the way to beat the world record of 49-0? Maybe he can but the cost will be high. This fight proved that Mayweather must continue training at a furious pace.

Portions of the crowd booed the fight result. On the undercard, Adrien Broner and Amir Khan won handily. Amir Khan basically took Luis Collazo to boxing school.
